It is described as a spiritual successor, not a direct sequel: the game will tell a new story with new characters. Announced at The Game Awards 2025, it is in early development for PC and consoles, with no official release date or specific console models named.
What is Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic?
Arcanaut Studios and Lucasfilm Games announced Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic at The Game Awards 2025, alongside a teaser trailer. The official description calls it a narrative-driven, single-player action RPG in which players take the role of a Force user travelling through a galaxy “on the edge of rebirth.” The story is set at the end of the Old Republic. Lucasfilm Games says player choices will deepen the protagonist’s journey toward light or darkness. The announcement establishes the broad premise, but does not detail the combat system, specific choices, or how those choices affect the story.
Is it a KOTOR sequel?
No. Lucasfilm Games VP and GM Douglas Reilly said it is “not a direct sequel or continuation” of KOTOR. The new game is intended as a spiritual successor: it aims to carry forward the legacy of cinematic, choice-driven role-playing, but it is not presented as KOTOR 3 or as a continuation of Revan’s story. Who is making the game?
Casey Hudson is leading the project as game director and heads Arcanaut Studios, which is developing the game in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games. Hudson directed the original Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy. Arcanaut says it was founded in July 2025 and is based in Canada, with headquarters in Edmonton and an additional office in Kelowna. (Arcanaut Studios; StarWars.com.)
What platforms will it be on?
Arcanaut’s announcement says Fate of the Old Republic is in early development for PC and consoles. It does not identify individual consoles, so no specific PlayStation or Xbox model is confirmed in the announcement. The studio has not provided a release date. (Arcanaut Studios.)

When will Fate of the Old Republic come out?
There is no official release date or detailed release window. In a GameSpot report published December 15, 2025, Hudson responded to rumors that the game would not arrive until 2030 by saying, “Game will be out before then. I’m not getting any younger!” That is a broad expectation attributed to the director, not a confirmed launch schedule. (GameSpot, December 15, 2025.)

For context on the game whose legacy this project invokes, StarWars.com’s Knights of the Old Republic page describes the original role-playing game and lists PC as an available platform. That is the predecessor, not Fate of the Old Republic.
