Starbucks’ matcha changes are about more drink choices and more control over sweetness—not a confirmed new powder formula. The company introduced unsweetened matcha powder in January 2025, then expanded its U.S. menu with new matcha drinks in 2026. Availability varies by season and store, so a launch announcement is not proof a drink can still be ordered today.
What changed in Starbucks matcha?
The clearest change to the base ingredient came in January 2025, when Starbucks said it introduced unsweetened matcha powder in response to customer requests. Customers can adjust a drink’s sweetness by changing the amount of syrup. Starbucks describes its powder as shade-grown, milled green tea, selected for a deep blue-green color and floral, sweet umami notes. Those are the company’s product descriptions, not independent testing.
The official announcements cited here do not say Starbucks has recently reformulated its powder. “Revamping” is best understood as a broader menu evolution: more matcha drink varieties, alongside the ability to customize sweetness.

Did Starbucks change its matcha supplier?
The official material cited here does not name a supplier or identify a growing region or grade. Starbucks says its matcha comes from “some of the oldest tea growers in the world,” but that description does not establish a particular country, farm or supplier change. There is no documented supplier change in these announcements.

In February 2026 commentary, Starbucks reported that tea revenue across its U.S. company-operated coffeehouses grew by more than 70% from fiscal year 2021 through fiscal year 2025. That figure covers tea revenue overall; it is not a matcha-only growth statistic. The same commentary said the year-round matcha lineup had grown from four drinks in 2023 to three times that number as of February 2026. Both are Starbucks-reported figures.
