Star Wars Battlefront II (2017) starts with a compelling change of perspective: you play as Iden Versio, an Imperial commander, in the aftermath of the second Death Star’s destruction. That gives the campaign room to tell a new story about loyalty and defeat. Its connection to familiar film events and heroes is also its central tension: the callbacks make the story easy to place in the saga, but can leave less room for Iden and Inferno Squad to take center stage.
A new story begins on the losing side
EA announced Star Wars Battlefront II for release on November 17, 2017, with an original single-player campaign starring Iden Versio, leader of the Imperial Inferno Squad. The game’s official page likewise describes a single-player story focused on Iden. Rather than beginning with another Rebel or Jedi viewpoint, the premise puts the player inside the Imperial ranks as the Empire confronts the destruction of its second Death Star.

That perspective creates an immediate dramatic question: what does loyalty mean when the cause you serve is collapsing? It also gives the campaign a character and setting distinct from the familiar films, at least at the outset. EA’s announcement called it a “new exciting story,” but that is promotional language, not an independent judgment of its quality.
How the film connection helps—and limits—the campaign
The official StarWars.com game page describes the campaign as bridging Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens across 30 years. That placement gives the story a clear role in the larger timeline: its events and characters can link the original trilogy’s aftermath with the later films.

There is a trade-off. Recognizable heroes and film-era events can make the campaign feel rewarding and immediately legible to fans. But when the story returns to established material, Iden and Inferno Squad may have less space to develop on their own terms. The key question is one of emphasis: does the saga connection deepen Iden’s story, or pull attention away from it? The premise and contemporary coverage establish that tension, not a universal verdict that callbacks weaken the campaign.
Is the campaign any good?
GameSpot’s launch-era review called the campaign “admirable” while describing the game as drawing on recognizable Star Wars highlights. That is one review’s characterization, not a consensus or a guarantee that every player will respond the same way. It captures the campaign’s split appeal: a fresh Imperial lead offers something less familiar, while the broader saga connection leans on what audiences already know.

If you most want a new character’s perspective on the Empire’s defeat, Iden’s role is the campaign’s strongest point of distinction. If you want a story that remains centered on Inferno Squad rather than repeatedly intersecting with established heroes and events, the film connections may feel like a constraint. This is best understood as a question of narrative focus, not a simple measure of whether the campaign is good or bad.
How long is the story?
In a 2017 pre-release report, GameSpot relayed a development-team estimate of “around 5-7, maybe 8 hours.” Treat that as an estimate, not a promised completion time: the report does not establish how long any particular player will take.

Do you play as the Empire, and is the campaign canon?
The Imperial perspective
Yes. Iden Versio is an Imperial commander and the leader of Inferno Squad, and the campaign is built around her viewpoint. The premise is specifically about the Empire’s side of events after the second Death Star is destroyed; that does not mean every moment of the game stays exclusively with Iden.
Its place in the saga
StarWars.com positions the story between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. That establishes its intended connection to the film chronology. The available sources here do not provide a separate, explicit canon-status statement, so the chronology should not be stretched into a more specific claim than the source makes.

The official development retrospective describes the campaign as a significant part of the game’s story while also emphasizing the importance of developing multiplayer’s scope and feel. That context helps explain why the campaign is one component of a larger game rather than the sole focus of the project; it does not, by itself, establish a particular design compromise or explain individual story choices.
Ultimately, the campaign’s most distinctive idea is also its best reason to play: seeing the Empire’s collapse through Iden’s eyes. Its place between major films makes that story matter to the larger saga, while the pull of familiar material can compete with the character-led story the premise promises. Whether that balance works for you depends on how much you value the new Imperial viewpoint versus time spent with established Star Wars figures.
