Sridevi’s screen dancing could be comic, sensual, mythic, folk-inflected or quietly expressive. These ten film sequences show that range; they’re a curated watchlist, not an objective ranking.

Ten Sridevi dance performances to seek out

The choices below span different movement styles, moods and ways of using the camera and character. A song’s fame is not the same thing as what makes its performance distinctive.

“Naino Mein Sapna” — Himmatwala (1983)

Among pots and pans, Sridevi and Jeetendra turn an everyday setting into exuberant masala spectacle. Filmfare and The Indian Express both note the earthen-pot staging and the duet’s high-energy appeal. Watch how the lively props and performance turn the set into part of the dance.

“Tarpat Beete” — Jaag Utha Insaan (1984)

A change of movement vocabulary: Filmfare credits legendary dancer and choreographer Gopi Krishna with choreographing the number and describes Sridevi’s movement as classical. It’s a useful counterpoint to the pop spectacle elsewhere in this list.

“Main Teri Dushman, Dushman Tu Mera” — Nagina (1986)

Sridevi’s snake-like movement belongs to the role, not just the song. Filmfare notes its blend of classical and folk elements; The Indian Express connects the performance to her shape-shifting snake-woman character. Notice how the movement makes the character’s transformation legible.

“Hawa Hawai” — Mr India (1987)

This fast-paced number makes facial expression as important as steps. Filmfare highlights Sridevi’s shifting expressions, while Scroll points to the combination of comic timing and movement. The performance’s humor comes through in her face and timing as much as in the choreography.

“Kaate Nahi Kat-Te” — Mr India (1987)

In contrast to “Hawa Hawai,” this blue-sari sequence is more restrained and sensual. Filmfare and The Indian Express describe its staging around an invisible partner. Watch how Sridevi sustains the scene through graceful movement and the suggestion of another presence, rather than a busy dance floor.

“Mere Haathon Mein” — Chandni (1989)

Choreographer Saroj Khan later recreated Sridevi’s performance on her 2011 show Nachle Ve. As quoted by Scroll, Khan said: “This song is very special to me in my career because every time I listen to the song, only Sridevi’s beautiful dance comes to mind.”

“Main Sasural Nahin Jaaongi” — Chandni (1989)

Scroll singles out this sequence for its expressive face and character-driven parody. It’s a reminder that screen dancing need not be a continuous display of elaborate steps: here, acting and expression carry much of the performance.

“Na Jane Kahan Se Aayi Hai” — Chaalbaaz (1989)

Rain, umbrellas and raincoats shape this comic, kinetic number. The Indian Express describes the weather and props as part of the character’s spontaneous, quirky performance; Scroll also discusses the rain-soaked “Na Jaane” sequence. Watch how the staging adds to the scene’s playful movement.

“Tandav” — Chandni (1989)

Scroll identifies this as one of the film’s powerful dance sequences. It’s best approached as an interpretive highlight rather than a settled pick for a definitive “best” list: the point here is the contrast it adds to the film’s other, very different performances.

“Morni Baga Mein” — Lamhe (1991)

Sources render the title as “Morni Baga Mein” and “Morni Baga Ma Bole.” Scroll describes Sridevi’s character personifying a peacock in a desert, while The Indian Express draws attention to the sand dunes and her graceful, lively manner. The open setting and buoyant performance give this number a folk-inflected feel.

What makes these performances feel different?

Four useful ways to compare them are the dance vocabulary and pace, the role of facial expression and acting, the staging and costume, and how the number expresses its character or film situation. These are ways to look closely, not a scorecard. For example, “Hawa Hawai” uses comic expression shifts, while “Main Teri Dushman” makes movement part of a snake-woman’s character; “Naino Mein Sapna” is buoyant, whereas “Kaate Nahi Kat-Te” builds its mood around restrained staging.
