It revealed that an ancient humanoid species seeded life on many worlds and left a message encoded in DNA. Discovery Season 5 takes that premise further: instead of asking why many species look alike, it follows the technology that made the seeding possible—and asks who should control it.
What Picard learned in “The Chase”
In the TNG episode “The Chase,” Captain Picard’s interest in archaeology helps the Enterprise crew follow clues hidden in DNA. Federation, Klingon, Romulan, and Cardassian representatives ultimately witness the same discovery: an ancient species had seeded many worlds, shaping the evolution of humanoid life and leaving a message in the genetic material.

The message, quoted by StarTrek.com, says: “You are a monument, not to our greatness, but to our existence…. Remember us.” The revelation gives a fictional explanation for why many intelligent species in Star Trek share a humanoid appearance: the ancient beings wanted their existence remembered by the life they helped create.
“The Chase” is a sixth-season TNG episode written by Ronald D. Moore and Joe Menosky and directed by Jonathan Frakes. Its story resolves the DNA mystery with a message and a moment of shared discovery, rather than with a detailed account of the ancient technology.

Who are the Progenitors?
In Discovery’s story, the Progenitors are the ancient beings whose genetic seeding of life was revealed in “The Chase.” The name identifies the creators behind that mystery; it does not mean that TNG explained every detail of their methods. Discovery Season 5 makes the technology behind their work the focus of a new pursuit.
How Discovery Season 5 develops the TNG story
The simplest way to understand the connection is why versus how. “The Chase” answers why many Star Trek species share humanoid traits: an ancient species seeded many worlds. Discovery asks how the process worked and turns the Progenitors’ technology into the object of a galaxy-spanning pursuit.
| Story element | TNG: “The Chase” | Discovery Season 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Central question | Why do many species look humanoid? | How did the seeding technology work, and what should happen to it? |
| Scope | One episode’s DNA mystery and revelation. | A season-long pursuit of the technology. |
| Resolution | The ancient species’ message explains its purpose. | Burnham decides what to do with technology powerful enough to raise questions of control. |
Jonathan Frakes, who directed “The Chase,” described it as a creative starting point for the season. He told StarTrek.com: “I just happened to get ‘The Chase,’ and it just happened to be an episode that Michelle [Paradise] had decided to use as a tipping off point for Season 5.”
Why Burnham lets the technology go
Discovery’s finale makes the technology’s fate a question of stewardship, not just ancient engineering. Co-showrunner Michelle Paradise said the finale would reveal the technology’s true nature and address Burnham’s decision about it; she described the choice as the resolution that felt right for the story in an interview with StarTrek.com.

As Doug Jones explained in an official interview account, Burnham decides not to bring the technology back to the Federation. She considers its power too great for any one person or culture to control, and lets it go. The ending therefore extends the TNG premise into a different dilemma: discovering what the Progenitors made does not automatically mean anyone should possess it.
Are the Progenitors the Preservers?
The Progenitors and the Preservers—the ancient species associated with the original Star Trek series—could be the same group, but that connection has not been confirmed in the story. StarTrek.com’s history of the Progenitors reports that Ronald D. Moore saw no reason the two groups could not be identical, while noting that the script did not make the link explicit. His qualification was: “But this could be them, and be internally consistent.” Treat it as a plausible creator suggestion, not established canon.

The Progenitors are fictional. Panspermia is a real scientific concept proposing that some building blocks of life may have come from space, as StarTrek.com notes in its Progenitor history. That idea does not demonstrate that extraterrestrial beings deliberately seeded Earth or other planets. The resemblance is limited to the possibility of material associated with life travelling through space; Discovery’s intentional, technologically directed seeding is science fiction.
Where “The Chase” fits in the viewing timeline
“The Chase” is part of TNG Season 6, while Discovery’s story follows in Season 5. Paramount+ lists Discovery’s Season 5 premiere, “Red Directive,” and “Under the Twin Moons” for April 4, 2024, and the finale, “Life, Itself,” for May 30, 2024. Its episode and season listing may vary by territory, so check the current catalog where you watch.
