For a straightforward first watch of Jean-Luc Picard’s story, watch Star Trek: The Next Generation seasons 1–7, then the four TNG films in release order, followed by all three seasons of Star Trek: Picard. This character-focused sequence gives the series and films that establish Picard’s story before its later continuation.

- Star Trek: The Next Generation, seasons 1–7
- Star Trek: Generations
- Star Trek: First Contact
- Star Trek: Insurrection
- Star Trek: Nemesis
- Star Trek: Picard, seasons 1–3
This order follows the TNG series with its four feature films in release order, then moves to Picard’s later chapter. StarTrek.com lists seven seasons and 178 episodes for The Next Generation, and three seasons for Picard.
Why watch the films before Picard?
The TNG series and films provide the character and crew history behind the later series. StarTrek.com describes Star Trek: Picard as taking place 20 years after viewers last saw Picard command the U.S.S. Enterprise; that interval is the official series synopsis’s description, not a calculation from the viewing order.
This is not a complete franchise chronology
The sequence is designed around Picard, not every event in the fictional universe. It does not insert episodes of Deep Space Nine or Voyager based on crossovers or stardates. StarTrek.com’s franchise viewing guide addresses a broader watch-through; its chronology is complicated by time travel, concurrent series, and alternate timelines.

How to watch: streaming or discs

StarTrek.com’s Picard page identifies Paramount+ and lists Prime Video outside the U.S. and Canada, as well as CTV Sci-Fi Channel and Crave in Canada. These are regional listings and catalogs can change, so check the service’s current catalog in your country.
One Blu-ray set
In 2023, StarTrek.com announced the 54-disc Picard Legacy Collection, containing TNG seasons 1–7, Picard seasons 1–3, and the four films listed above. The announcement gave a U.S. release date of November 7, 2023. That announcement establishes the set’s contents and release date, not its current stock or price.
