That distinction explains why the finale feels both conclusive and open-ended.
What happens in “Life, Itself”?
“Life, Itself” is Season 5, Episode 10 and the series finale. Paramount+ lists its release date as May 30, 2024, and its episode guide describes Burnham and her crew fighting for the Federation’s future.

In the main story, Burnham enters the alien portal to secure the Progenitors’ technology for the Federation. Book helps her, while Rayner leads Discovery against the Breen. The immediate conflict is resolved, and the episode gathers the characters for Saru and T’Rina’s wedding. Executive producer and co-showrunner Michelle Paradise said the choice Burnham makes about the technology felt like the only choice the writers could make.
The episode then shifts forward in time. An older Burnham and Book have made a home on Sanctuary Four with their son, Leto. After Leto visits, Burnham takes command of Discovery, now in its earlier configuration, and sets out on a Red Directive mission. She instructs Zora to wait at a remote destination for longer than Burnham’s lifetime. The mission invokes “Craft,” signaling the ship’s eventual connection to “Calypso.”

What was added after cancellation?
Paradise said the finale was originally written as the Season 5 finale. The team learned during editing, nearly a year later, that it would also end the series. She recalled: “We didn’t know, of course, going into the writing of the finale that it would be our series finale.”
The ending as first written would have shown Burnham and Book walking away together on a beach. Once the team knew the series was ending, it returned to the episode to address character arcs, the connection to “Calypso,” and the feeling of saying goodbye to the characters and ship. Paradise said the added material was written in roughly seven or eight weeks and filmed in three days, as reported by TV Insider.
The result has two distinct jobs. The main episode closes the Season 5 conflict and gives the crew a gathering; the coda offers a glimpse of Burnham and Book’s later life while making Discovery and Zora part of the series’ final image. Paradise said the team wanted to show how Discovery could reach the future seen in “Calypso.”
How does the finale connect to “Calypso”?
“Calypso,” an earlier Short Trek, follows Craft and a sentient Discovery far in the future. In “Life, Itself,” the Red Directive mission and Burnham’s instruction for Zora to wait provide the link: the finale points toward the circumstances in which Craft will encounter the ship. Paradise said, “We definitely wanted to make sure that we tied up that loose thread.”

The coda makes that connection legible without depicting every event between Burnham’s departure and Craft’s arrival. It closes a continuity loop, but it does not narrate the entire future history of Discovery or Zora.
Who is Kovich?
The finale reveals that Kovich is Agent Daniels, a temporal agent previously introduced in Star Trek: Enterprise. It is a franchise-continuity reveal rather than part of the “Calypso” setup. Paradise discussed the reveal in her TV Insider interview.

There is no completed Season 6 outline established by Paradise’s comments. She described her work as being at a very early stage and said she had begun looking at a story that could ultimately tie up “Calypso.” Her exact qualification was: “I was in the very early stages of looking at that.” The interview does not confirm a detailed season plot or other specific arcs, so proposed storylines beyond that should be treated as speculation.
That makes the finale’s two kinds of closure important to distinguish:
Best Value
- Shown on screen: the Progenitors’ technology conflict, the crew’s farewell, Burnham and Book’s future, and Discovery’s instruction to wait.
- Only contemplated: a possible Season 6 story that might have further connected the series to “Calypso.”
Where to watch or revisit the finale
Paramount+ lists “Life, Itself” as the Season 5 finale. A 2024 Paramount Home Entertainment announcement also described a complete-series Blu-ray and DVD release containing all 65 episodes and more than 15 hours of special features. Those figures describe the announced physical-media set, not current streaming access, retail stock, or pricing.
For episode events and the future sequence, see StarTrek.com’s official recap of “Life, Itself”. Its release information and the official Paramount+ listing identify the episode as the series finale.
