In Squid Game, the shapes on the guards’ masks identify their jobs: circles are workers, triangles are soldiers, and squares are masked managers. Creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk says the role system was inspired by ants, while production designer Chae Kyoung-sun connects the recurring shapes to the drawing of the squid game.
What do the circle, triangle, and square mean in Squid Game?
Hwang’s explanation gives each mask shape a specific role in the organization. The symbols help distinguish staff who otherwise wear the same outfit.

Hwang described the arrangement as inspired by ants, whose workers have distinct assigned roles. The shapes therefore function as a role code within the fictional organization, as well as a quick visual cue for viewers. In his interview with Tatler Asia, he explained the mapping and its ant inspiration.
Why does Squid Game use these shapes?
The role assignments and the shapes’ visual origin are related but separate explanations. Hwang explains what the symbols mean for the guards’ jobs; production designer Chae Kyoung-sun explains how the shapes fit the show’s visual design.

Chae says circle, triangle, and square recur throughout the series, with their most active use on the masks. She links them to the squid-shaped board drawn on the ground for the traditional game. The Korean Film Council interview with Chae discusses that design connection.
The shapes also sit within the series’ broader visual and thematic language. Netflix’s production account describes the creative team’s interest in displays that invite viewers to consider hidden intentions, and Hwang frames the story as an allegory about modern capitalist society and extreme competition. That context adds meaning to the show’s design, but it does not change the specific jobs associated with the mask symbols.

Do the mask symbols show a promotion ladder?
Hwang’s explanation identifies workers, soldiers, and masked managers, but does not establish that guards automatically advance from circle to triangle to square. Treating the shapes as a fixed promotion sequence, or as proof of a character’s history or moral character, goes beyond what his account confirms.
