Star Trek: Discovery ends its hunt for the Progenitors’ ancient technology with a choice not to claim it. The power to create life makes the final quest a question of responsibility as much as discovery—and the series’ hopeful farewell invites comparison with “Faith of the Heart,” the familiar name for Star Trek: Enterprise’s theme.

What sets Discovery’s final quest in motion?

Paramount+ announced that season five would be Discovery’s final season. The 10-episode season began April 4, 2024, with two episodes, followed by weekly Thursday releases. Its central mystery was an ancient power hidden for centuries, pursued by Burnham’s crew and dangerous rivals (Paramount Press Express).

The search leads to technology created by the Progenitors, an ancient civilization whose power can create life. That discovery turns the adventure into a harder question: who, if anyone, should control a force capable of shaping life across the galaxy?

Why doesn’t Burnham take the Progenitors’ technology back to the Federation?

Burnham refuses to bring the technology under Federation control. As actor Doug Jones, who plays Saru, put it, “This is a moral question; it’s a great thing to address” (StarTrek.com, June 5, 2024).

The decision makes restraint the quest’s real resolution. If one person, culture or institution possesses the means to create life, it could impose its own priorities on a power that affects everyone. Burnham’s refusal does not solve every risk; it rejects the idea that the Federation should own the answer simply because it found the technology. In that sense, the finale treats the diversity of life as something no single authority should possess.

How does “Life, Itself” close the series?

“Life, Itself” had to resolve the season’s adventure while also becoming the series finale. Co-showrunner Michelle Paradise said the team learned the show was ending while the episode was already in editing: “We didn’t know, of course, going into the writing of the finale that it would be our series finale.” Writer Kyle Jarrow returned to help with the additional work.

The episode also addresses the connection to “Calypso,” a Star Trek: Short Treks installment, while aiming to make sense for viewers who had not seen it. Paradise described the character work as central to the task: “And most importantly that we wrap up the character arcs and the emotions and give the audience an emotional experience that would feel satisfying.” The published StarTrek.com interview describes the series as concluding its five-season run across 65 episodes and “Life, Itself” as having an 80-plus-minute runtime (StarTrek.com, June 7, 2024).

Does Burnham end up with Book?

Yes. In a time-jump coda, Burnham and Book are together on Sanctuary Four with their son, Leto. Burnham has become an admiral and prepares to take Discovery on its final mission. Paradise said the creative team wanted the pair reunited and wanted them to have a happy future.

Is “Faith of the Heart” the Enterprise theme song?

Yes. “Faith of the Heart” is the fan-familiar name for the theme associated with Star Trek: Enterprise. StarTrek.com identifies its official title as “Where My Heart Will Take Me,” says Diane Warren wrote the song and that it was originally recorded by Rod Stewart for Patch Adams, then adapted for Enterprise; Russell Watson performed the version associated with the series. A separate StarTrek.com playlist feature calls Watson’s version “Going Where My Heart Will Take Me” and notes that fans commonly know it as “Faith of the Heart” (StarTrek.com; StarTrek.com).

The phrase is a useful thematic frame for Discovery’s ending: the crew’s final journey calls for conviction, trust and hope. It should not be mistaken for a confirmed production callback. The cited accounts establish the song’s connection to Enterprise, not that the Discovery finale uses it or that its creators deliberately invoked it.
