Player 067 in Squid Game is Kang Sae-byeok, played by Hoyeon Jung (also credited as Jung Ho-yeon). A North Korean defector and pickpocket, Sae-byeok enters the contest hoping to reunite her family. Spoilers for Seasons 1 and 3 follow.
Who is Player 067?
Player 067 is Kang Sae-byeok, one of the contestants in the first season of Squid Game. Vogue identified her as a secretive pickpocket and Jung as the actor playing “Competitor 067” in an October 7, 2021 interview. Vogue’s interview with Hoyeon Jung also notes that the role marked Jung’s acting debut.
Sae-byeok is a North Korean defector. Her guarded manner is part of how the character navigates a dangerous contest, but her central motivation is personal: she wants to bring her mother over and reunite their family.
What does Sae-byeok want?
Sae-byeok’s family is the emotional center of her story. In Netflix Tudum’s Season 3 finale explainer, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk describes her dream: “Sae-byeok tried to send money to the North, dreaming of bringing her mother over so that the three of them could be reunited and live happily together.” Netflix Tudum’s ending explainer says her younger brother, Cheol, eventually reunites with their mother.

Who plays Sae-byeok, and how did the actor prepare?
Hoyeon Jung plays Sae-byeok; viewers may also recognize her name in the form Jung Ho-yeon. Jung told Korea JoongAng Daily that she kept a diary to consider what shaped the character’s outlook and practiced a dialect used by many North Korean defectors. That is Jung’s account of preparing for the role, not a general description of how defectors speak.
Jung also explained the contrast she saw between herself and Sae-byeok in an interview with Teen Vogue: “For me, I try to put on a very bright face, a perky face all the time, whereas Sae-byeok tries to hide herself.”

During the marble game, Sae-byeok and Ji-yeong share their names and stories while knowing the rules mean one of them will die. Their conversation briefly turns a contest designed to pit people against each other into a moment of trust and recognition.
Jung told Teen Vogue that exchanging names in this scene was one of her favorite moments and carried meaning for her. The scene’s impact comes from what the characters share under pressure, as well as from the fact that they understand the stakes.
