Spoilers for Squid Game Seasons 1 and 2. Season 2 makes a persuasive case that continuing Squid Game came at a cost: it takes time to return to the games, revisits the series’ lethal format, and ends without resolving its central conflict. But that does not prove the show should have ended after Season 1. The fairer verdict is that Season 2’s cliffhanger makes the continuation feel incomplete on its own, while its changed Gi-hun gives the story a coherent reason to go on. Now that Season 3 is the final season, the question is whether that larger arc earns the detour.
Why Season 2’s ending feels like an argument against continuing
Season 2 ends with Gi-hun’s attempted uprising defeated. The Front Man kills Jung-bae, Gi-hun’s friend, and Gi-hun is left staring at his body. He still does not know that Young-il, the fellow player he treated as an ally, is the Front Man.
The season closes on trauma and an open question rather than a resolution: can Gi-hun keep trying to save the other players? Lee Jung-jae, who plays Gi-hun, described the intended question this way: “After what’s happened to his friend, can he still maintain his objective of saving the other people in the game?” The hook is immediate, but the season leaves both Gi-hun’s struggle and the fate of the game unsettled at that point.
That is a legitimate basis for saying the season does not stand as well on its own. In a December 26, 2024 review, Time criticized the long wait to reach the island and games, the return to the earlier play-and-kill structure, and an abrupt cliffhanger that made the season feel unfinished. The same review praised the series’ distinctive visual style and performances, and found stronger development for some female characters. That is one critic’s assessment, not evidence of a universal response.

The structural complaint is straightforward: if Season 1 felt like a complete moral and emotional statement, Season 2 asks viewers to re-enter the same machinery, delays its central confrontation, then withholds resolution at its own endpoint. That can make the continuation feel less like a necessary next chapter than an extension designed to carry the story forward. It is an interpretation of how the seasons fit together, not proof that the series was supposed to end after the first one.
Was Gi-hun’s story worth continuing?
The strongest case for Season 2 is character, not novelty. Creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk said Gi-hun has seen too many deaths to return to his former self: “There’s something inside him that has just been broken.” That change gives him a reason to re-enter the game that differs from simply repeating his earlier experience. Lee Jung-jae has also said he tried to preserve signs of Gi-hun’s conscience and goodness.

The conflict is made explicit in the performers’ accounts of the two men. Lee Byung-hun described the Front Man as “someone who believes that there is absolutely no hope for the world or humanity.” Gi-hun, by contrast, continues to hope people and society can change. Their opposing views give the continuation a thematic question to pursue: whether Gi-hun’s faith in people can survive what the game does to them.
That is a coherent reason to continue the story, even if the pacing or cliffhanger frustrates a viewer. The distinction is between a premise that can support another chapter and a season that delivers satisfying closure. Season 2 has a character-based rationale for going on; its ending still postpones the payoff.

What the production history establishes—and what it doesn’t
Netflix announced Season 2 on June 12, 2022, confirming the return of Gi-hun and the Front Man and teasing the new character Cheol-su in its renewal announcement. The announcement establishes that the continuation was planned; it does not establish why it was made or whether it was artistically necessary.
The Associated Press later reported that Hwang wrote Seasons 2 and 3 in six months and said deciding what should happen with Gi-hun was the biggest challenge. That is useful context for the creative focus, but it does not show that Netflix forced the continuation or that the writing schedule explains the finished season’s strengths or weaknesses. There is no basis here for treating Season 1 as a definitively intended ending.

What the viewing figures can tell you
Netflix’s Season 2 ending explainer reported 192.6 million views and ranked it as the third-biggest season of a Netflix TV show at the time of publication. Ahead of Season 3, Netflix’s roundup described nearly 600 million views across the first two seasons and called Season 2 the service’s third most popular show of all time.
These are Netflix-published figures, not independent audience research. They demonstrate substantial viewing and platform success, but they do not tell us whether viewers preferred Season 2, thought the story improved, or wanted the series to continue. Commercial reach and narrative satisfaction answer different questions.

Is Squid Game finished?
Yes. Netflix identifies Season 3 as the final season and says the full series is available on the platform. That changes how Season 2 can be judged: its unresolved ending is now a bridge within a completed three-season arc, rather than an open promise of another season still to come. The existence of that final season does not, by itself, make Season 2 necessary or its cliffhanger satisfying.
Was Squid Game Season 2 worth it?
If you wanted a self-contained season with a decisive ending, Season 2 has a real weakness: it stops at a moment of defeat and leaves Gi-hun’s defining question unanswered. If you value the attempt to follow a changed protagonist whose hope collides with the Front Man’s despair, the continuation has a clear dramatic purpose. The evidence supports calling Season 2 less complete on its own; it does not prove that the series would have been better if it had ended after Season 1.
