St. Vincent’s All Born Screaming is most compelling when its extremes feel like parts of the same argument: abrasive industrial rock and distortion collide with passages of striking atmosphere and melody, while the album circles mortality and the instability of being alive. Annie Clark’s first self-produced record under the St. Vincent name makes those contrasts central to its identity—not a detour from it.
What kind of album is All Born Screaming?
Released April 26, 2024, All Born Screaming is St. Vincent’s seventh full-length studio album. Clark is its primary songwriter and musician, and it is her first self-produced release. Universal Music Canada announced the album and release date; the Associated Press review and Guardian interview describe Clark’s role and self-production.
That authorship matters to the listening experience. Rather than settling into one genre, the record moves among art rock, industrial abrasion, heavy distortion, and more atmospheric or melodic stretches. The Associated Press hears acid jazz and retro-futurism alongside industrial grind; Apple Music’s album listing points to the contrast between the grinding “Flea” and the lush “Sweetest Fruit.”
Do the album’s contrasts cohere?
The central question is not whether every track shares one texture, but whether the changes in texture build a convincing arc. NME describes an opening that lulls before turning toward more abrasive noise-rock and heavy beats. That pivot gives the record a sense of movement, but it also makes sequencing important: the softer and harsher passages need to register as deliberate shifts in pressure, not as separate versions of the album competing for space.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
At its strongest, the contrast itself becomes the album’s organizing principle. Melody does not simply soften the noise, and the noise does not erase the melodic passages; their friction keeps the record unsettled. Listeners drawn to a consistent sound may find the range less cohesive, while those who value surprise may hear a purposeful refusal to stay comfortable. The right measure is how persuasively the mood changes accumulate, not whether the album can be reduced to a single genre label.
How do mortality and disorder shape the record?
Mortality is a useful lens for hearing the album’s shifts between beauty and abrasion. In The Guardian’s interview with Clark, the record is described as shaped by her encounter with mortality. NME frames its central outlook around the fact that people leave life as they enter it, and reads embracing chaos as part of the album’s response.

These themes illuminate the record’s unsettled emotional weather without fixing the meaning of every song. A particular lyric or production choice can invite an interpretation, but the available artist interview and review accounts do not establish a definitive song-by-song explanation. The album is more productively heard as a work preoccupied with how precarious life feels than as a set of coded statements with one answer.

All Born Screaming is an ambitious, sharply contrasting St. Vincent album whose self-production gives Clark’s shifts in scale and texture a strong authorial frame. Its appeal depends on whether the listener experiences abrasion, melody, and atmosphere as one emotional progression. The record’s most distinctive quality is that it makes instability—not a settled genre or mood—the point.
