Spotify said it paid more than $9 billion in royalties to the music industry in 2023, a record annual payout by a single retailer at the time. The figure is not $9 billion paid directly to performers: Spotify allocates royalties to rightsholders, and labels, distributors, publishers and other partners pass money on according to their contracts. Spotify’s later reported totals were $10 billion for 2024 and more than $11 billion for 2025, making the $9 billion figure a milestone for 2023 rather than its current annual total.
What Spotify’s $9 billion figure counts
In its March 19, 2024 Loud & Clear report, Spotify said it made more than $9 billion in royalty payments for 2023 and called it the highest annual payment to the music industry from any single retailer. It is a company-reported aggregate paid to music-industry rightsholders—not a measure of artists’ personal earnings or take-home income.
The total covers two broad kinds of royalties. Recording royalties go to the owners of sound recordings, commonly labels or distributors. Publishing royalties relate to the underlying compositions and flow through publishers, performance rights organizations, and mechanical agencies. Artists and songwriters may receive money through these channels, but the amount and route depend on their individual arrangements.
How Spotify royalties reach artists and songwriters
Spotify allocates a pool by streamshare
Spotify does not set a guaranteed flat rate for each stream. It says royalties are calculated using streamshare: the proportion of eligible listening attributable to a rightsholder in a particular country and period. Spotify says roughly two-thirds of revenue from Premium subscriptions and advertising is allocated to recording and publishing royalties. The resulting rightsholder allocation is not a promise that a given number of plays will produce a particular sum for an artist.

In Spotify’s words, “Spotify pays royalties to artists’ and songwriters’ selected rightsholders, who then pay artists and songwriters based on their individual agreements.” That means a play count alone cannot determine what a performer or writer ultimately receives.
Contracts determine individual receipts
Recording-rights payments may pass through a label or distributor; composition royalties may pass through a publisher, PRO or mechanical agency. Each may have its own agreement, reporting schedule, deductions or split. Spotify’s royalties support page says payments often happen monthly, but timing and amount depend on the relevant agreements. Spotify says it cannot see those contracts, so the company’s aggregate payout cannot reveal an artist’s net income after contractual splits, commissions or fees.

What the 2023 artist figures show—and what they do not
Spotify said DIY artists and artists signed to independent labels generated about half of its 2023 royalties. The Associated Press reported that this amounted to $4.5 billion, and that Spotify’s figures counted the following numbers of artists crossing gross royalty thresholds on the platform:
| 2023 Spotify royalty threshold | Artists reported above threshold | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| More than $1 million | 1,250 | Recording and publishing royalties generated, as reported by AP from Spotify data |
| More than $100,000 | 11,600 | Spotify-generated royalties, as reported by AP |
| More than $10,000 | 66,000 | Spotify-generated royalties, as reported by AP |
These counts show that many artists generated royalties above specified thresholds; they do not say what the typical artist earned, how many artists earned less, or what any of those artists received after contractual arrangements. Spotify’s figures are not an independently audited account of individual take-home pay. The AP’s March 19, 2024 report attributed the figures to Spotify.

How the annual payout changed after 2023
Keep each total attached to its reporting year. Spotify reported $10 billion in payouts for 2024 and said independent artists and labels generated more than $5 billion—about half of the total. Its 2025 Loud & Clear reporting later put that year’s payouts above $11 billion and said nearly $70 billion had been paid since the service’s founding.
| Reporting year | Spotify-reported royalties | Independent artist and label figure |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | More than $9 billion | $4.5 billion, about half, according to Spotify figures reported by AP |
| 2024 | $10 billion | More than $5 billion, about half |
| 2025 | More than $11 billion | Not stated in the cited 2025 total |
The totals are Spotify disclosures, not a breakdown of what artists personally kept. Read the 2024 and 2025 figures in their respective Loud & Clear reports.

Spotify’s 1,000-stream eligibility policy
Spotify announced in 2023 that, beginning in early 2024, a track needed at least 1,000 streams in the preceding 12 months to generate recorded royalties. Spotify said very small payments often failed to reach uploaders because of minimum withdrawal thresholds and transaction fees. The company said redistributing those amounts would not change the overall royalty pool paid to rightsholders. These are Spotify’s stated policy and rationale, not an independently established assessment of the policy’s effects. The announcement is available in Spotify’s royalty-system update.
What the announcement means for the music industry
The announcement documents the scale of Spotify’s royalty pool and the growing amount it says is generated by independent artists and labels. It does not establish that streaming income is evenly distributed, that most artists can make a living from Spotify, or that an artist will earn a predictable amount per play. To understand an individual’s earnings, the relevant evidence is their statements from labels, distributors, publishers or collecting societies and the terms of their agreements—not the platform-wide total.
