The best estimate comes from identifying the exact release, judging its condition conservatively, and comparing it with similar records that actually sold. As the University of California, Santa Barbara Library notes, “Determining the value of 78rpm records can be difficult.”
What determines a 78 record’s value?
A record’s value depends on the particular release, its condition, collector demand, and evidence from comparable sales. A well-known performer or song is not enough to establish a match: different issues, labels, catalog numbers, and variations may have different levels of demand. Nor does a high asking price prove that anyone will pay it.
- Exact identification: label, artist, title, catalog number, and any visible release variation.
- Condition: cracks, chips, warping, groove wear, and the state of any original sleeve.
- Demand and sale evidence: recent completed sales of the same or closely comparable release.
- Selling costs: the amount a seller nets can differ from a published sale price.
The available sources do not establish a universal price range or current average that applies across releases, regions, and selling channels.
How to estimate what your 78s are worth
- Record the identifying details. Read both labels and note the artist, title, label, catalog number, and any visible variation. Keep both sides in mind when searching.
- Inspect and describe the condition. In good light, look for cracks, edge chips, warping, groove wear, and damage to the sleeve. Be conservative; a famous name should not influence your grade.
- Compare completed sales. Search completed eBay auctions by label, artist, and identifying number, and check published prices realized from specialist auction companies. Match the release and condition as closely as the available records allow.
- Use price guides as research leads. A guide can help identify likely comparables, but its scope, edition, and assumptions matter. It is not a guaranteed selling price.
- State uncertainty when evidence is thin. If you cannot find close matches, treat the estimate as uncertain rather than relying on an unrelated high sale or an active listing.
UCSB recommends completed eBay auctions and auction-company prices realized as research aids, and names Nauck’s Vintage Records as one example. These sources can inform an estimate; they do not guarantee what another copy will sell for.

How condition affects a 78
Two copies of the same release may have different market outcomes if one is clean and the other is worn or damaged. Discogs says its marketplace uses the Goldmine Standard, whose descriptions can help make condition terminology more consistent. Its grading guidance is not a 78-specific appraisal, and its stated relationships between grades and Near Mint value should not be used as a fixed price calculator for 78s.
For a 78-specific inspection, note cracks, edge chips, groove wear, and whether the original sleeve is damaged or missing. The 78rpm.nz valuation guide warns that guide assumptions may reflect unusually good copies, so a worn disc should not be valued as though it were clean. If a record seems fragile or its condition is uncertain, do not clean, play, or repair it just to assign a grade; the cited sources do not provide a preservation procedure.

Which records deserve closer research?
Very early issues, picture discs, unplayed copies, and unusual releases can be leads for further investigation, not automatic signs of high value. The Victor-Victrola page gives examples of this kind but says its authors do not actively track current collecting prices or rarity. Its undated estimates should not be treated as current market facts.
Genre can help determine which reference sources are relevant, but it does not guarantee demand. UCSB identifies American Premium Record Guide, 1900–1965 as useful mainly for jazz, blues, and hillbilly 78s; the guide does not cover classical or popular records. It therefore cannot price every inherited collection.

Where to look for comparable sales and guidance
- Completed eBay auctions: UCSB suggests searching by label or artist. Look for completed transactions, not just current asking prices.
- Auction prices realized: Specialist auction companies may publish results; UCSB names Nauck’s Vintage Records as an example.
- Printed reference: American Premium Record Guide, 1900–1965 is relevant chiefly to jazz, blues, and hillbilly 78s, not classical or popular releases.
- Condition terminology: Discogs’ Goldmine-based marketplace guide can help clarify grading language, but its percentages are not a universal formula for 78s.
For an individual record, the strongest estimate comes from matching its exact release and condition to comparable completed sales. A specialist may be useful when the item appears unusual or no close comparisons are available.
