How did the House of the Dragon Season 2 finale leak?
Contemporary reports said clips from the finale first appeared on TikTok on Tuesday, July 30, 2024. Variety reported that one account posted 14 videos containing roughly 30 minutes of footage. The account was banned about three hours after posting, according to the publication. These are details from reporting at the time, not figures in a public HBO incident report. Variety’s report covered the posts and their spread.
HBO attributed the clips to an “unintentional release from an international third-party distributor.” The company did not identify that distributor or describe how the clips passed from it to TikTok. The public account therefore does not establish a specific company or person responsible, a deliberate release by HBO, or a confirmed chain of custody. ComicBook.com reproduced HBO’s statement.

HBO is aggressively monitoring and removing clips from the internet, and fans can watch the episode in its entirety this Sunday night on HBO and Max.”

The statement described HBO’s response as monitoring and removing clips, and directed viewers to the complete episode on HBO and Max at the time. It did not say every copy had been removed. Variety reported that copies were reposted to X and Reddit. That means spoiler exposure was not limited to the original TikTok account, though the available reporting does not establish how many copies remained online or the final reach.
Published view estimates differed and were snapshots, not a verified final count:
- Variety reported approximately 50,000 to 100,000 views at publication.
- TV Insider, citing ComicBook.com, reported more than 100,000 views before removal. TV Insider’s report relayed that figure.
The estimates should not be added together or treated as an independently confirmed audience total. Reporting also does not establish the precise number of people who encountered reposts across platforms.
