Spoilers for the ending of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The film’s five main story worlds are Miles Morales’s Earth-1610, Gwen Stacy’s Earth-65, Pavitr Prabhakar’s Earth-50101, Miguel O’Hara’s Earth-928, and Earth-42, the origin of the spider that bit Miles. Each has a distinct role and visual identity. They are the central map for understanding the plot, not every reality glimpsed in the film.
The 2023 sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) is set approximately a year after the first film. Sony’s official synopsis describes Miles being drawn into a multiversal adventure involving hundreds of Spider-People.
What are the main universes in Across the Spider-Verse?
The easiest way to follow the multiverse is to separate each Earth’s number from its story purpose: one is Miles’s home, one is Gwen’s, one brings Miles and Gwen together with Pavitr, one houses Miguel’s Spider Society, and one is where the spider that changed Miles’s life came from.
| Earth | Home or base | Role in the story | Visual identity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Earth-1610 | Miles Morales’s home, including Brooklyn | The home-world baseline: Miles tries to balance school, family, and being Spider-Man as the Spot’s threat draws him into the multiverse. | The film’s familiar Brooklyn setting; no single distinctive visual treatment is specified in the cited production accounts. |
| Earth-65 | Gwen Stacy’s home | The opening follows Gwen and her father, Captain George Stacy, and gives the film an early view of Gwen’s personal stakes. | Watercolor-inspired, high-color backgrounds shift with Gwen’s mood. |
| Earth-50101 | Mumbattan, home of Pavitr Prabhakar / Spider-Man India | Miles and Gwen meet Pavitr and confront the Spot here. | A kaleidoscopic Mumbai-Manhattan hybrid. |
| Earth-928 | Miguel O’Hara’s Nueva York and Spider Society headquarters | The futuristic hub where Miguel leads an organization that returns anomalies to their home realities. | A marker-inspired approach, distinct from the paint-stroke look used elsewhere. |
| Earth-42 | The origin world of the spider that bit Miles | The film’s ending sends Miles here instead of home to Earth-1610, revealing a dangerous alternate version of his life. | The ending establishes its story significance; the cited production accounts do not specify a defining visual technique for this world. |
Earth-1610: Miles’s home and the story’s baseline
Earth-1610 is where Miles lives, including in Brooklyn. It grounds the film in the obligations he is trying to hold together: school, his relationship with his family, and his work as Spider-Man. The Spot’s growing threat pulls that familiar life into a much larger conflict.

- Miles Morales, Brooklyn?s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.
Keep this Earth distinct from Earth-42. Miles is from Earth-1610, but the spider that gave him his powers came from Earth-42. That difference is essential to the ending.
Earth-65: Gwen’s watercolor world
The film opens in Gwen Stacy’s world, following her as she navigates her relationship with her father, Captain George Stacy. Sony describes Earth-65 as watercolor-inspired: vivid backgrounds can bleed and shift with Gwen’s emotional state, making the world’s appearance part of her character arc rather than just a location change.

Sony’s production feature says artists used Rebelle to animate and illustrate the watercolor approach. The feature also describes the broader effort to build distinct visual styles for the film’s different worlds. Sony’s production feature outlines those tools and design choices.
Earth-50101: Mumbattan and Pavitr Prabhakar
Mumbattan is on Earth-50101 and is home to Pavitr Prabhakar, Spider-Man India. Miles and Gwen encounter Pavitr and the Spot there. The city’s name and design combine Mumbai and Manhattan into a deliberately hybrid setting.

Look-development supervisor Bret St. Clair discussed Mumbattan’s visual design in an August 2023 interview with The Credits. Sony’s production account also notes that Indian and Indian-American filmmakers were crucial to rebuilding signature Mumbattan scenes.
Earth-928: Miguel’s Nueva York and the Spider Society
Earth-928 is Miguel O’Hara’s Nueva York, where the Spider Society is based. Miguel leads the organization, which returns anomalies to their home realities. The society gives the film a central meeting point for Spider-People from across the multiverse—and a setting for the clash between Miguel’s rules and Miles’s refusal to accept them.

Earth-928’s design sets it apart from the paint-led approaches associated with some other worlds. St. Clair said its visual direction drew on designer Syd Mead and used markers rather than paint strokes. Sony says artists used a tool called Patchy Bomby to apply signature surface treatments, including in the Earth-928 chase. These details describe design choices, not a ranking of which world looks best.

Miguel calls certain recurring experiences across Spider-People’s lives “canon events” and argues that they help preserve multiversal stability. In his account, some events must happen even when they bring terrible consequences. He believes Miles’s father is destined to die, while Miles refuses to accept that prediction.

The film presents this as the central disagreement between Miguel and Miles, not as a neutral rule that the story conclusively proves. Sony’s film synopsis frames Miguel’s belief in necessary events as part of the conflict; TIME’s ending guide explains how the dispute leads to Miles’s escape.
Why does Miles end up on Earth-42?
Spoilers for the final reveal: Miles ends the film on Earth-42 because the transport system identifies the spider DNA in him and sends him to that spider’s origin world—not to his home on Earth-1610.
- Before the first film’s events, a collider experiment moved a spider from Earth-42 to Earth-1610.
- That spider bit Miles on Earth-1610, giving him his powers.
- At the end of Across the Spider-Verse, the transport system reads Miles’s spider DNA and routes him to the spider’s origin: Earth-42.
TIME’s explanation of the cliffhanger connects the collider, the spider’s journey, and the final misdirection. The reveal is more than a wrong turn: Earth-42 holds a dangerous alternate version of Miles’s life, leaving the story on a cliffhanger.
Are these every universe shown in the film?
No. These five worlds are the main map for the plot, not an exhaustive list of every reality or Spider-Person that appears. The film includes brief cameos and other alternate settings; the five Earths above are the ones needed to follow its central journey and ending.
