If you have found or inherited old 78 rpm records, start by protecting them: handle each disc by its edge and label, keep it upright and supported, and avoid trying it on an ordinary turntable until you know the equipment is suitable. For basic loose dust, the Library of Congress advises canned air; mold, waxy deposits, damage, or uncertain playback calls for caution rather than an improvised cleaning or repair.
What to do first
- Make a safe place for the records. Set them upright on a flat, stable surface, supported so they cannot lean or fall. Keep them away from heat, direct light, vibration, and damp or extreme conditions.
- Handle them carefully. Wash and thoroughly dry your hands first. Hold each disc at its edge and label area; keep fingers off the grooved playing surface.
- Identify what you have. Note the label, catalog number, artist, and visible condition. Photographing those details can help you keep track of a collection without repeatedly handling the grooves.
- Do not assume it is ready to play. A record marked 78 rpm may require playback equipment and a setup appropriate to that particular disc. The available Library of Congress guidance does not establish one universal turntable, stylus, speed, or equalization setting for all historic records.
The Library of Congress guidance on care, handling, and storage specifically includes 78s among grooved discs. It recommends handling them by the edge and label areas and keeping playback equipment clean and maintained.
How to store old 78s
Keep records upright and fully supported
Store discs vertically, not stacked flat, in sturdy shelving or a box that supports them without allowing them to slump or lean. The Library of Congress recommends sturdy, immovable dividers every 4–6 inches; each divider should support the full face of the discs in their sleeves. Avoid squeezing records tightly together or leaving them to bow under their own weight.
Choose a stable location and suitable sleeves
For home collections, the Library recommends a cool environment (room temperature or below), relative humidity around 35–40%, cleanliness, and stable conditions. These are preservation recommendations, not a requirement to install climate-control equipment in every home. Avoid attics, basements, garages, and other places prone to leaks or environmental extremes; keep records away from radiators, vents, strong light, and vibration.

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) sleeves are one option the Library names for grooved discs. Choose a sleeve that fits the disc and any original sleeve you intend to retain; do not force an oversized or tight fit. For storage boxes, the Library recommends acid- and lignin-free paper stock. Its guidance does not endorse a particular brand or seller.
Pack carefully if you move or ship them
Use a box strong enough to carry the records’ weight. The Library advises shock-absorbing material on all six interior sides, upright packing, and rigid supports the full size of the discs every few inches. Mark the box clearly so it stays upright during handling.

How to clean a 78 rpm record
For loose dust
The Library of Congress lists canned air as its basic method for blowing dust from grooved discs, including 78s. This is limited guidance for dust removal, not a general recipe for washing or treating every kind of residue. Follow the product’s directions and avoid touching or abrading the grooves.
For mold, waxy deposits, or a damaged disc
Do not treat visible mold, waxy exudates, or damage as ordinary dust. The Library’s guidance directs readers with mold or waxy deposits to specialist conservation information from the Northeast Document Conservation Center. For valuable, fragile, or badly affected records, consult a conservator or a qualified audio-preservation service rather than experimenting with household cleaners or tools.

Can you play an old 78 on a modern turntable?
Not necessarily. A 78 is a recording format, not a guarantee that a particular turntable, stylus, or playback setting is appropriate. The sources cited here do not provide a universal setup for all 78s. Before playing one, check the turntable manufacturer’s instructions and seek knowledgeable advice for the specific disc and equipment. Do not force a record onto a player or use a setup you cannot verify, especially with a damaged or historically significant disc.

The Library of Congress recommends following the playback machine manufacturer’s maintenance instructions and having more thorough cleaning or maintenance performed by professionals with suitable equipment. A dirty or poorly maintained player can put a fragile original at risk.

Use a format-specific transfer service when needed
If you lack appropriate playback equipment, or a record is too fragile to play safely, consider a full-service laboratory experienced in transferring that specific original format. The Library of Congress recommends looking for specialists who work with archivists or cultural heritage organizations. Ask prospective providers:

- What experience do you have with 78 rpm records or this exact type of disc?
- Is the transfer done in-house, and how are fragile originals handled and returned?
- What digital files and documentation will you receive?
These questions help you compare services; the Library’s advice establishes format-specific expertise and archival transfer as important, but does not endorse a particular provider.
Ask whether imaging may help a damaged disc
Some damaged records or cylinders may be digitized using IRENE imaging, a method offered as a service by the Northeast Document Conservation Center. It is not a guarantee that every damaged disc can be recovered. The Library describes it as a possible option when conventional playback is not appropriate.
Digitization can preserve access to a recording even as playback machines become obsolete, but it does not replace safe storage of the original. The Library’s Recorded Sound collection includes 78 rpm discs, and its National Jukebox project account reports digitizing 10,000 78 rpm records; that institutional figure does not indicate how many recordings in a private collection can be recovered or are available online.
What to do before selling, donating, or discarding records
Do not assume that age alone establishes a record’s value, or that every old disc has a straightforward disposal route. First record the label, catalog number, artist, and condition, and avoid cleaning or altering the disc before assessing it. The appropriate next step depends on the particular collection and your location; local donation and recycling options vary, and no universal outlet or valuation method is established here.
