Sung Jin-woo’s defining power is growth: he begins as an exceptionally weak E-rank hunter, then becomes the System’s sole player, able to level up. Later, his power is associated with the Shadow Monarch and the ability to raise defeated enemies as shadow soldiers. The broad progression is clear, but exact skills and mechanics depend on the point in the story and the adaptation.
Where Jinwoo’s powers begin
Jinwoo starts out as an E-rank hunter—so weak that the publisher’s synopsis for the first volume says much of his contribution to raids is trying not to get killed. In the official English comic’s framing, a dangerous dungeon encounter leads the System to choose him as its sole player. That selection gives him an unusual opportunity among hunters: he can level up his abilities.

This is the key to understanding his early power. Jinwoo is not introduced as a secretly unbeatable fighter; his starting point is the bottom of the hunter hierarchy. His story turns on a new route for improvement that the official comic listing says may let him grow beyond known limits. Read the official English comic listing on Tappytoon.
What the System changes
The System makes Jinwoo’s strength a progression rather than a fixed rank. Instead of remaining defined by his initial weakness, he can improve through leveling. That makes him different from the ordinary hunter premise and explains why his capabilities change substantially as the story advances.

The official comic and publisher summaries establish this broad mechanism, but they do not provide a complete catalog of Jinwoo’s skills, exact stats, power ceiling, or every rule governing the System. Those details should be tied to a specific point in the licensed story rather than treated as one static, version-neutral list.
How the shadow-soldier power works
A major later ability is turning defeated enemies into shadow soldiers and commanding them as an army. Netmarble’s official Solo Leveling: ARISE page describes Jinwoo extracting the shadows of defeated enemies and assembling a force from them. That is a useful summary of the central idea: his power extends beyond personal combat to building an army from fallen opponents.
Rank #2
Netmarble’s ARISE page is a game-specific description. It supports the broad shadow-soldier concept, but it should not be used as a complete account of the original comic or novel’s rules, limits, or every ability related to shadows.
From System player to Shadow Monarch
“System player” and “Shadow Monarch” describe different aspects or stages of Jinwoo’s development, not interchangeable labels for one initial power. The System explains his distinctive growth path; the Shadow Monarch framing belongs to his later story and is closely associated with his shadow army and immense power.
Rank #3
Netmarble’s Solo Leveling: KARMA story page places Jinwoo after a victory over the Monarchs, with immense power awakening as he continues to fight in a dimensional gap. This is the game’s later-franchise story framing, not a comprehensive ability guide. Read the KARMA story summary.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which version gives the definitive details?
The licensed comic and novel are the source-story options for following Jinwoo’s progression. Anime and games can frame or present story material differently, and game feature pages may describe abilities in terms specific to gameplay. For that reason, a precise skill list or claim about an ability’s limits needs a named version and story point; the official summaries cited here support the broad arc, not every detailed mechanic.
Rank #4
For a direct visual starting point, Ize Press/Yen Press publishes Solo Leveling, Vol. 1 in paperback and digital form. The publisher identifies Jinwoo as an E-rank hunter and gives the paperback’s publication date as March 2, 2021; the volume begins his story rather than serving as a guide to all his later abilities. See the publisher’s volume 1 comic page.
