Stephen Colbert’s June 5, 2025, Late Show monologue turned the public fight between Donald Trump and Elon Musk into a comic spectacle. The immediate backdrop was Musk’s criticism of Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act; the dispute then spilled into threats involving government support for Musk’s companies and SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft. Colbert’s “flame war” language was satire, while the threats and accusations were part of a real, fast-moving political argument.
What started the Trump–Musk feud?
The immediate policy trigger was Musk’s criticism of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, including its projected effect on federal finances. The Congressional Budget Office estimated that the act would increase the federal deficit by $2.4 trillion between 2025 and 2034, according to the June 25, 2025, analysis by LSE USAPP. LSE USAPP’s analysis interprets the clash as exposing competing priorities within the Republican coalition; that is the author’s political reading, not a settled explanation of every motive.
How did the argument escalate?
On June 5, Trump and Musk exchanged posts and statements across Truth Social and X. Trump said Musk had been asked to leave because he was “wearing thin,” and connected Musk’s anger to the end of electric-vehicle mandates. Trump also threatened to end government support for Musk’s companies. Musk, in turn, said he would decommission SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft, which ferries astronauts to and from the International Space Station. These were threats made during the dispute; they do not establish that Dragon was decommissioned or that government support was ended. The Guardian’s June 6 roundup recounts the exchange.
What did Colbert say?
Colbert opened by saying “a full-scale flame war has broken out between the world’s most famous besties, Donald Trump and Elon Musk,” then dubbed them “Two Huge Jagoffs.” When mocking Trump’s description of Musk as having “went crazy,” Colbert joked, “He’s not the mayor of Crazy Town! He’s the governor of Off-his-meds-sylvania.” He also compared the pair’s behavior to “Real Housewives on the girls’ trip.” The lines are punchlines, not literal descriptions of either man. The Guardian reproduced them in its recap.

TheWrap’s recap and video of the monologue also describe Colbert’s Tesla callbacks: he joked about Trump being a Tesla owner who hated Musk, and made a bumper-sticker joke about Musk’s allegation concerning the Epstein files. Those jokes added topical details, but the bill and the escalating public statements were the core of the segment.
What was Musk’s Epstein-files allegation?
Musk claimed that Trump was in the Epstein files and suggested that this was why the files had not been made public. That was Musk’s allegation, not an established fact in the reporting cited here. Colbert referred to the claim as part of his monologue; the available accounts do not verify it. The Guardian’s account reports Colbert’s reference, while TheWrap’s recap describes the related joke.

Why the monologue works as a rundown
Colbert’s comedy followed the dispute’s sharp change in register: a fight over legislation and its fiscal consequences became a public exchange of personal attacks, threats to companies, and a dramatic statement about a spacecraft. His “flame war” and reality-TV comparisons distilled that spectacle into a comic frame. They should be read separately from the policy dispute, the CBO estimate, and the question of whether any threat would be carried out.
