In a 2025 retrospective, she recalled expecting the subject to be avoided and said the questions made her feel that Colbert was judging her decision to take the picture. That expectation and her interpretation are Griffin’s account, not independently confirmed facts about the interview.
What Griffin says Colbert asked her
Griffin revisited the interview on her YouTube show Talk Your Head Off in May 2025. TheWrap reported that she recalled warning a segment producer that discussing the photo could “get really dark,” as could the details of its fallout. Griffin said she believed the subject would not be raised.
Instead, she remembered Colbert pressing her on the image with questions along the lines of “What were you thinking?” and “You must have known it was too far.” These are excerpts and paraphrases from Griffin’s recollection as reported by TheWrap, not a transcript-based analysis of the full exchange.
Why Griffin found the exchange upsetting
Griffin said she felt her eyes fill with tears but did not cry. She interpreted the questioning as more biased against her and her right to take the photo than she had expected, and wondered whether Colbert would have questioned male comics in the same way. Those are her feelings and interpretation; they do not establish Colbert’s intent.

TheWrap reported that Colbert’s representatives had not immediately responded to its request for comment. The available account therefore centers on Griffin’s retrospective description rather than a response from Colbert or an independently confirmed understanding between Griffin and the show about what would be discussed.
What the 2017 photo showed—and Griffin’s apology
The controversy began in May 2017, when Griffin posted a photo from a shoot holding a bloody replica or mask resembling then-President Donald Trump. The violent imagery drew strong criticism. In an apology transcribed by CNN on May 31, 2017, Griffin said: “I’m a comic. I crossed the line, I moved the line, then I crossed it. I went way too far.” She also said, “The image is too disturbing. I understand how it offends people. It wasn’t funny. I get it.”

Professional fallout and what happened afterward
CNN announced it had ended Griffin’s New Year’s Eve hosting role. Reports also described canceled comedy work and the loss of an endorsement deal. The Guardian reported that the Secret Service investigated the incident; an investigation is not evidence that Griffin was charged with or convicted of a crime. CBS News later covered the professional consequences and Griffin’s return to touring.
In its 2019 report, CBS News said Griffin’s tour grossed more than $4 million. That is the gross figure reported by the outlet, not an independently audited accounting. The report also described Griffin taking charge of booking and production as she returned to touring. Those later developments provide context for the “fallout” Griffin discussed; they do not mean every hardship she experienced afterward had one established cause.
