No—not on the evidence cited in the headline. A 2022 PerthNow story reported a recollection from Steve Irwin’s former cameraman Justin Lyons: he said Bindi Irwin once told him she did not like bugs while they were away on trips. That anecdote does not establish that she never wanted to continue her father’s legacy.
What did Justin Lyons say about Bindi Irwin?
In a report published by Stephanie McKenna on 7 November 2022, PerthNow said Lyons had worked with Steve Irwin for more than ten years and quoted him recalling time spent with Bindi on trips to Far North Queensland:
“Bindi and I spent a lot of time together,” Lyons said. “We’d go up to Far North Queensland and while they were doing whatever, Bindi and I would go off. She’d say to me, ‘I don’t really like bugs’, but she was expected to do all this crazy stuff.”
PerthNow’s account presents Lyons’s recollection. It is not a verified transcript or independent confirmation of Bindi’s private views. The quoted words concern bugs and activities she was expected to do; they do not say she rejected conservation work or her father’s broader legacy.

What the headline claim does—and does not—show
The claim that Bindi “never wanted” to follow Steve Irwin’s footsteps is broader than the anecdote PerthNow quotes. Disliking bugs, if accurately recalled, would not by itself show what she wanted to do with her life. The article also includes comments attributed to unnamed sources, but those are not direct, verified statements from Bindi and do not settle the question.
The available reporting does not provide direct verified testimony from Bindi confirming or denying Lyons’s recollection. The careful conclusion is therefore limited: Lyons said she once told him she did not really like bugs; that does not establish her overall wishes as a child.

What is known about Bindi Irwin’s conservation work
Australia Zoo’s official biography of Bindi describes her as a wildlife conservationist and says she continues to work with her family through Wildlife Warriors. It also recounts her use of television and educational work to promote care for wildlife. That is relevant evidence of her public and professional activity as an adult, but it cannot prove what she privately felt during the childhood episodes Lyons recalled.

In a report dated 4 September 2026, ABC News covered Bindi and Robert Irwin marking the twentieth anniversary of Steve Irwin’s death. Bindi reflected on his legacy in terms of love as well as conservation, saying, “I have learned that beyond wildlife conservation, his legacy is one of love.” ABC’s coverage documents a later public statement, not what Bindi privately wanted as a child. It adds context to how she speaks about her father’s legacy today without verifying or disproving Lyons’s earlier recollection.
