The segment used Maduro’s public dancing and Venezuelan oil to frame questions about the operation’s rationale; those are the show’s satirical themes, not established explanations of the administration’s motive.
What the segment said
The official segment was titled “Did Maduro’s Dancing Prompt Trump To Attack Venezuela? | No Regime Change | Another War For Oil.” In its description, the show suggested Trump might have been angered by Nicolás Maduro’s public dancing, noted that Maduro’s vice president was running the country, and pointed to U.S. interest in Venezuelan oil. The question about dancing was rhetorical framing, not proof of why the operation happened. Watch the official segment on The Late Show’s YouTube channel.
Colbert’s jokes and criticism
In a January 6 roundup, The Guardian reported that Colbert questioned why the administration would seize Maduro in an operation he characterized as apparently violating U.S. and international law. That is Colbert’s criticism as reported by the newspaper, not a court finding. The Guardian also quoted his joke: “Do you know what this means? Those Epstein files must be crazy.” Read The Guardian’s roundup.
TheWrap reported that Colbert contrasted Trump’s “peace on Earth” New Year’s resolution with the operation. Colbert said: “Invading a country with a mustachioed dictator and saying, ‘Don’t worry, their oil will pay for this war,’ is kind of where I got on this train 20+ years ago.” The line was part of his satirical commentary, not an independently established account of the operation’s costs or purpose. What the timeline establishes—and what it does not
The official Late Show channel published the segment on January 5, 2026; the Guardian and TheWrap accounts followed on January 6. The show had addressed Venezuela earlier: its December 17, 2025, episode description said the U.S. appeared ready to attempt regime change. That earlier description predates the January operation and does not establish what later motivated it. See the December 17 episode description.
Taken together, the segment and the contemporaneous coverage document Colbert’s jokes and criticism. They do not independently establish the administration’s motive, prove that oil was the purpose, or settle the legality of the operation.
