Stephanie Rice’s story after Beijing 2008 was not a straight line from Olympic success to certainty. In an interview account published by PerthNow on January 24, 2025, the three-time gold medallist described professional disappointments that left her feeling she “couldn’t see a way forward,” and said that faith, relationships and new opportunities became part of a profound change in her life. This is Rice’s personal account, not a diagnosis or a formula for recovery.
From three Olympic golds to life beyond the pool
At the Beijing 2008 Olympics, Rice won gold in the 200m individual medley, the 400m individual medley and the 4x200m freestyle relay, according to the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Those results made her a prominent public figure, but they did not settle what a career or identity after elite swimming would look like.

In an Australian Sports Commission transcript about the 400m individual medley at Beijing, Rice recalled advice from her coach: “My coach always said to focus on the simple things, focus on what you can control. Focus on just swimming your own race in your own lane.” That advice speaks to the pressures of competition; her later challenges were different, involving work, plans and the uncertainties of life after sport.
Plans disrupted and work that did not materialize
In the account of Rice’s conversation with Q Weekend published by PerthNow, she described working on coverage of the Rio 2016 Olympics, then pursuing a personal brand in India and plans connected with teaching swimming there. The report says COVID-era disruption put those plans on hold. After returning to Australia, she faced further professional setbacks, including contracts that did not come through.

Rice told Q Weekend, as quoted by PerthNow, “I couldn’t see a way forward.” The phrase captures how she experienced that stretch; it should not be read as a clinical description. The profile also recounts that she pursued an MBA despite an injury setback, an effort that continued amid uncertainty rather than resolving it immediately.
Why Rice says faith became important
Rice’s sister encouraged her to attend a church service near the end of 2023, according to the PerthNow report. Rice described being open to trying something new and finding a sense of belonging through faith. She presented that experience as part of a profound change in her life, alongside relationships and work opportunities that followed.

Her account does not establish that religious practice alone caused later changes, or that faith will have the same meaning for someone else. It shows how Rice says faith helped her make sense of a difficult period and feel connected at a time when she had been struggling to imagine a way forward.

At the time of the January 24, 2025 profile, PerthNow reported that Rice had completed an MBA, married Mark Lassey, was living in Dubai and planned to continue entering eSports. The article framed these developments as opportunities she had not expected a year earlier. They are details reported at that publication date, not confirmation of Rice’s circumstances today.

Rice’s experience complicates the easy public narrative that Olympic achievement guarantees an uncomplicated next chapter. The documented medals remain a defining part of her sporting record; her account of the years afterward is about trying different kinds of work, encountering plans that fell through and finding a new source of belonging.
