Star Trek’s Lost 33-Inch Enterprise Model Resurfaces After Nearly Five Decades

The Enterprise model found after decades is the 33-inch wooden prototype used in the original Star Trek pilot and opening credits—not the Smithsonian’s 11-foot filming model.

The rediscovered Enterprise is the 33-inch wooden prototype used in the original Star Trek pilot and opening credits—not the 11-foot model now held by the Smithsonian. After it disappeared following a loan to the makers of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, it surfaced in a 2023 eBay listing and was returned to Gene Roddenberry’s son, Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry, in April 2024. Its missing decades remain unexplained.

Which Enterprise model resurfaced?

The recovered object is the first, smaller Enterprise model: a wooden miniature about 33 inches long (roughly 3 feet). It was used in the original series’ pilot and opening credits, then served as a prototype for the larger ship model used to film episodes. The Associated Press describes it as three feet long; Smithsonian Magazine’s 2024 account gives its length as 33 inches.

It is not the 11-foot original-series filming model in the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum. The two artifacts have different sizes, screen roles and histories:

Artifact Size Role Known provenance
Rediscovered wooden prototype 33 inches (about 3 feet) Used in the pilot and opening credits; prototype for the larger model Returned to Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry in April 2024
Smithsonian original-series filming model 11 feet Used to film episodes Paramount donated it to the Smithsonian in 1974

The Smithsonian’s collection record describes the larger studio model, not the rediscovered miniature.

How did the model go missing?

Gene Roddenberry lent the small model to the makers of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, released in 1979. He did not get it back. What happened to it after that loan is not known; the available reporting does not establish whether it changed hands, was misplaced or was deliberately kept.

That uncertainty is central to the story. The recovery revealed the model’s later appearance, but it did not fill in the decades between the film-production loan and its discovery.

How was it found and returned?

The 2023 eBay listing

In fall 2023, the model appeared on eBay with a $1,000 starting bid. The listing described a custom Star Trek Enterprise by model maker Richard Datin. According to reporting, the sellers had found it in a storage unit. That account is part of the reported provenance; it does not document the model’s full chain of custody.

Authentication and return

After questions arose about the listing, the sellers contacted Heritage Auctions. The auction house authenticated the model and facilitated its return to Rod Roddenberry, Gene Roddenberry’s son. The Associated Press reported the return in April 2024, dating it to the weekend before its April 18 story.

Heritage Auctions executive vice president Joe Maddalena said he “instantly knew that it was the real thing.” Maddalena also told the AP it might sell for more than $1 million at auction, while calling it “priceless.” That was his speculative estimate, not an appraisal, a sale price or a verified market value.

What happens to the model now?

In 2024, Rod Roddenberry said he planned to have the model restored and was working on ways for the public to see it, with a museum as his hoped-for destination. The reporting at that time did not confirm that restoration had been completed, identify a museum partner or announce an exhibition date.

Why the miniature matters to the Enterprise’s design story

The recovered model connects the familiar image in the opening credits to an early physical prototype. It was a first step in a design lineage that led to the much larger model used for episode photography. The distinction matters: the rediscovered object is important for its role in the pilot and credits, while the Smithsonian’s 11-foot model is the separate artifact used to film the series’ episodes.

The Enterprise’s design was intended to look ahead rather than resemble a near-future spacecraft. As art director Walter Jefferies explained in the 1968 book The Making of Star Trek, quoted by Smithsonian Magazine: “We didn’t want the Enterprise to look like something currently planned for our space program. We knew that by the time the show got on the air, this type of thing would be old hat. We had to go further than even the most advanced space scientists were thinking.”
