Several actors are reported to have passed on or been unable to take Star Wars roles, but the stories do not all describe the same kind of casting decision. Al Pacino, Burt Reynolds, Jodie Foster and Toshiro Mifune are among the better-documented examples; Kurt Russell, by contrast, explicitly disputed the claim that he turned down the franchise. The familiar “10 actors” framing can obscure those important differences.
What counts as turning down a Star Wars role?
A casting story can mean an actor was considered, auditioned, received an offer, or joined a project before leaving after a production change. Those are different events. The available accounts do not establish a definitive ten-person list of actors who all received and refused formal offers, so each case needs to be described on its own terms.
- Reported offer and refusal: an account says the actor was offered a role and did not take it.
- Audition or consideration: the actor pursued or discussed a role, but that alone does not establish an offer.
- Departure after casting: someone was attached to a project and later left; that is not necessarily a refusal of the original offer.
The clearest reported refusals and conflicts
| Actor | Role | What the account establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Al Pacino | Han Solo | Retrospective accounts attribute a decision to pass to Pacino, who said he did not understand the script. |
| Burt Reynolds | Han Solo | ABC News reports that Reynolds wrote in his memoir that he was offered the part. |
| Jodie Foster | Princess Leia | NME reports Foster confirmed an offer and said a pre-existing Disney film contract conflicted. |
| Toshiro Mifune | Reported as Obi-Wan Kenobi and/or Darth Vader | The Guardian attributes the account of turning down a key role to Mifune’s daughter, Mika. |
Al Pacino as Han Solo
Time quotes Pacino as saying, “Star Wars was mine for the taking, but I didn’t understand the script.” Time’s retrospective account and The Daily Beast’s 2025 report both describe his explanation as difficulty understanding the script; the latter reports his phrase “different language.” The cited reason is confusion about the material, not a stated dislike of the film.
Burt Reynolds as Han Solo
ABC News reports that Reynolds said in his memoir that he was offered Han Solo. This supports reporting the offer as Reynolds’s account; it does not establish a reason for declining, so none should be inferred.

Jodie Foster as Princess Leia
NME reports that Foster confirmed she was offered Leia and could not take the part because she was already under contract for a Disney film. Christopher Walken’s separate statement that he auditioned for Star Wars is evidence of an audition, not a declined offer.
Toshiro Mifune: a family account of a key role
The Guardian attributes the story to Mifune’s daughter Mika. Her account says he turned down a key role because he was concerned about how the film would represent samurai. Accounts identify the possible role as Obi-Wan Kenobi and/or Darth Vader, so it is more accurate to retain that uncertainty than to present one character as settled fact. This is a daughter’s recollection, not a contemporaneous statement from Mifune.

Cases often folded into “turned down” lists
Kurt Russell: a disputed claim
Russell said, “I didn’t turn down ‘Star Wars.’” ABC News reports that he spoke with George Lucas about choosing between projects and laughed at the rumor that he had turned down Han Solo. His own denial means he should not be counted as a confirmed refusal.
Jim Henson and Yoda
Time’s retrospective says Henson was unable to take a role and recommended Frank Oz for Yoda. That is a scheduling or availability account paired with a recommendation, not straightforward evidence that Henson rejected a formal offer.

Gary Oldman and General Grievous
Time also describes an attempted casting of Oldman as the voice of General Grievous. An attempt to arrange casting does not by itself show that Oldman received and declined a completed offer.
Benicio del Toro and Darth Maul
Time reports that del Toro left after the amount of dialogue for Darth Maul was reduced. That is a departure following a change to the role, not the same event as turning down an initial offer.

Leonardo DiCaprio: offer history not established here
The Independent and Slashfilm include DiCaprio among actors who declined or did not pursue a role. The accounts available here do not establish the exact offer history through a primary interview, so they are not enough to state as fact that he received and rejected a formal Star Wars offer.

Lists that place a confirmed offer, an audition, a casting attempt, an unavailable actor and a later departure side by side can make every story sound like a simple refusal. They are not equivalent. The strongest accounts here support specific, attributed claims about Pacino, Reynolds, Foster and Mifune, while Russell’s public denial directly challenges his inclusion. Other recurring names come with materially different or less firmly established circumstances. The evidence does not settle a definitive roster of ten confirmed refusals.
