The live-action series stars Nicolas Cage as Ben Reilly, a private investigator and superhero in 1930s New York. Viewers can also choose between the two modes when watching the series on Prime Video.
What “True Hue” means
“True-Hue Color” is the official label for the color presentation. Ars Technica reported that the show’s footage was digitally shot and processed separately for color and black and white. The color version was intended to have a highly saturated look reminiscent of classic Technicolor. Calling it “colorized” may describe the contrast between the versions, but it should not be taken to mean that color was mechanically added to a completed monochrome master.
The creative choice gives viewers two distinct visual presentations: a monochrome noir look and a saturated color one. The available reporting does not establish that either is objectively better.
What the teaser shows about the series
Amazon describes Ben Reilly as a seasoned, down-on-his-luck private investigator in 1930s New York. After a deeply personal tragedy, he grapples with his past while serving as the city’s one and only superhero. The series is based on Marvel’s Spider-Man Noir comic.

Nicolas Cage described Reilly as “70 percent Humphrey Bogart and 30 percent Bugs Bunny,” according to Ars Technica. It is Cage’s colorful characterization of the character, not a formal guide to the show’s tone.
Why the series has two visual modes
The two presentations are a deliberate creative choice, not simply a choice between a finished black-and-white image and an automatically colorized copy. Cinematographer Darran Tiernan told Space.com that the production involved extensive testing and coordination across departments: “We went through a lot of testing and discussions. Then it was a matter of synching departments so they knew what camera and lighting set-ups looked like.”
