Spare Parts Puppet Theatre’s move to Claremont Showground was first described in January 2024 as a short-term arrangement. On 2 October 2025, the company and the Royal Agricultural Society of WA announced a $5.3 million redevelopment of the Ellie Eaton Theatre and adjacent pavilion as a new home for puppetry. The announcement sets out the project’s intended facilities, but does not establish a completion date or confirm that the work is finished.
How Spare Parts moved from Fremantle to Claremont
Spare Parts Puppet Theatre’s Fremantle auditorium was condemned in 2022, according to PerthNow’s 11 January 2024 report. The company was presenting performances at the Ellie Eaton Theatre at Claremont Showground in 2023.
In January 2024, PerthNow described Claremont as the company’s temporary home and quoted a government spokesperson calling it a “short-term base.” At that point, planning and tenancy details were still being worked through. That description reflects the status reported then; it is not the only account of the venue’s future.
What the redevelopment announcement says
On 2 October 2025, Spare Parts and the Royal Agricultural Society of WA announced a $5.3 million redevelopment of the Ellie Eaton Theatre and an adjacent pavilion, presenting the project as a new home for puppetry. The company said the planned facilities include:

The company named the WA Government, Lotterywest and the Royal Agricultural Society of WA among the project’s supporters. Its announcement describes the proposed scope; it does not verify construction progress or say that the facilities are complete. Read Spare Parts’ announcement.
How to understand the $3.8 million grant and $5.3 million project figure
The two amounts refer to different descriptions and come from different sources. The Government of Western Australia’s 2023–24 Mid-year Financial Projections Statement records a $3.8 million capital grant for upgrades to the Ellie Eaton Theatre to support Spare Parts’ relocation. The later $5.3 million figure is the redevelopment value stated in the company’s October 2025 announcement.

The available statements do not provide a detailed reconciliation between the grant and the total project value. They should not be treated as competing estimates of the same funding component.
Where to find Spare Parts performances at Claremont
For its 2026 seasons, Spare Parts lists Level Up! and Rules of Summer at Centenary Pavilion, Claremont Showground. Its visitor information gives vehicle access via Gate 1 and pedestrian access via Gates 1 and 10. It says onsite parking is free, Claremont station is within walking distance, and Loch Street station is closer to pedestrian access through Gate 10.

The 2025 announcement establishes the redevelopment’s stated value, partners and intended facilities. It does not confirm a completion date or establish that construction is underway or finished. The project should therefore be described as announced, not as a completed venue upgrade.
