The Basilica of Bom Jesus in Old Goa is an icon of Goan identity because it brings together the region’s religious devotion, layered history and public remembrance of St Francis Xavier. That is an interpretation grounded in the shrine’s heritage and religious significance—not a claim that every Goan relates to it in the same way. The most recent exposition covered by official sources ran from November 21, 2024, to January 5, 2025, and has ended.
Why St Francis Xavier matters in Goa
Known in local devotional usage as “Gõycho Saib,” St Francis Xavier is closely associated with Goa through the veneration of his relics at the Basilica of Bom Jesus. The name conveys devotion and cultural importance; it does not establish that all Goans share one view of the saint or the exposition.
The Basilica is more than a historic building. Its chapel contains the saint’s relics, and the shrine remains part of religious life as well as a destination for visitors. The Government of Goa describes the basilica and its chapel of relics in its Basilica of Bom Jesus profile; state tourism sources likewise present the church as a place of both religious and visitor significance.
How the basilica became a heritage landmark
The Basilica belongs to UNESCO’s Churches and Convents of Goa World Heritage property. UNESCO describes the monuments as reflecting Goa’s period as the capital of Portuguese India and its role in the spread of Christianity in Asia. The property’s significance is not only architectural: UNESCO also notes continuing ceremonial and religious use.

In its description of the site’s religious and historical importance, UNESCO states: “At the Church of Bom Jesus, Goa conserves Saint Francis-Xavier’s tomb.” The tomb connects the basilica to the broader history of Catholicism in Asia, while the continuing veneration of the relics gives the monument a living role in the present.
What happens during the exposition
The exposition is a public period of veneration of St Francis Xavier’s sacred relics. The Basilica of Bom Jesus is the saint’s shrine and the usual resting place of the relics. During the 2024–25 exposition, they were taken in procession from the basilica to the Sé Cathedral, where the public could venerate them.

The two churches therefore have distinct roles in the event: the Basilica is the shrine from which the relics are carried, while the Sé Cathedral served as the public veneration venue during that exposition. The Basilica’s account of the 2014 exposition describes the procession and its historical context.
The 2024–25 exposition: dates and status
The most recent exposition documented in the official sources cited here was the 18th. It opened on November 21, 2024, and closed on January 5, 2025. The Government of Goa announced the dates in its preparations notice; the Ministry of Tourism’s event listing identifies it as the 18th exposition, and the Basilica’s official materials give the liturgy schedule and the theme, “We are messengers of the Good News.”

That event has ended; those dates should not be treated as a current festival schedule or a statement of when the next exposition will take place. Government and tourism materials describe the exposition as decennial, but that does not guarantee an exact ten-year interval. The available official sources do not establish a next date.
Devotion, memory and cultural interpretation
The exposition’s significance also appears in cultural heritage work. During the 2024 exposition period, the Museum of Christian Art presented “Sacred Archives: Memories & Objects” at Santa Monica in Old Goa in connection with the Serendipity Arts Festival. The exhibition shows how the subject can be approached through objects and historical memory as well as church ceremony; it is not evidence of a general public consensus about the saint or the basilica.

Seen together, the shrine, the relics’ public veneration and Old Goa’s heritage setting help explain why the Basilica of Bom Jesus can serve as an icon of Goan identity. The claim describes an important cultural association, not a measured or universal account of how Goans identify.
