South Park’s Season 27 premiere, “Sermon on the ‘Mount,” drew praise from named critics for its political bite, a sharp dismissal from the White House and a deadpan reply from co-creator Trey Parker. Some commentary saw the episode as taking aim not only at Donald Trump but also at Paramount, the company behind the show. Those reactions were prominent, not representative: the available coverage does not establish what viewers overall thought.
What happened in the Season 27 premiere?
“Sermon on the ‘Mount” aired on Comedy Central on July 23, 2025. Paramount+ lists it as Season 27, Episode 1. The official episode summary says Jesus returns to South Park as residents face possible demise.

The Washington Post’s account describes Jesus arriving at the school and setting off a church-and-state dispute. The episode also depicts South Park’s version of Trump trying to cozy up in bed with Satan, and includes a fictional $5 billion lawsuit against the town. During the Satan gag, Trump is asked whether he is on the “Epstein list.” That line referenced a live public controversy over the Epstein files; it is not evidence of wrongdoing.
What were critics praising—and what did they qualify?
Immediate reviews focused on the premiere, not the season as a whole. Forbes noted that there were too few episodes available for a season review when it gathered reactions on July 25, 2025.

Political force
Forbes quoted Liz Shannon Miller of Consequence describing the episode as a reminder of what “punching up” can look like. Miller called it “a piece of subversive political art”—her assessment, rather than a consensus verdict. Rolling Stone critic Alan Sepinwall said, “At precarious moments like this, certain things need to be said out loud, even if they’re being packaged with juvenile d— jokes.” His comment captures the tension in these responses: critics could regard the satire as politically pointed while recognizing its intentionally juvenile packaging.
Mocking the company behind the show
TheWrap highlighted selected social-media posts praising the Trump jokes and the episode’s willingness to mock Paramount despite the company’s new deal with Parker and Matt Stone. Those posts illustrate some online reactions; they are not a survey of viewers or a measure of overall sentiment.

The Atlantic’s July 31 analysis offered a different emphasis. It argued that Paramount was a deeper target, with Trump serving as a “Trojan horse” for satire about the company’s recent choices. The context included Paramount’s settlement of Trump’s lawsuit over a 60 Minutes interview and its cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The Washington Post and AP reported that Paramount had also reached a five-year streaming deal with the South Park creators around the premiere. The idea that the episode’s central target was Paramount is The Atlantic writer’s interpretation, not confirmed authorial intent.
How did the White House and Parker respond?
AP reported that White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers criticized the show on July 25, 2025: “This show hasn’t been relevant for over 20 years and is hanging on by a thread with uninspired ideas in a desperate attempt for attention.”

At a Comic-Con panel the previous day, Parker was asked about the backlash. AP reported that he replied, “We’re terribly sorry,” then held a long, deadpan-comic stare. The contrast was striking: a formal political dismissal met with a brief performance of mock contrition.
A separate joke about censorship
AP also reported Parker’s account of a production exchange over whether to blur a penis in the episode. He said producers had asked for it to be blurred and recalled answering, “No you’re not gonna blur the penis.” This is Parker’s description of the exchange, not independently documented production correspondence.

How many people watched?
Paramount Press Express reported nearly 6 million cross-platform viewers and said the premiere had Comedy Central’s biggest season-premiere share since 1999. TVLine reported more specific figures: 5.9 million total cross-platform viewers in Live+3 and a 9.2 linear share among adults 18–49, up 68% versus the previous season premiere.
These are reported reach figures, not approval ratings. They do not show whether viewers agreed with the episode, enjoyed it, or watched beyond the stated measurement window.

What the reaction does—and does not—show
- Political satire: Named critics praised the premiere’s willingness to make an overt political point, while acknowledging its deliberately juvenile style.
- Corporate satire: The Atlantic read the Trump material as a route into criticism of Paramount; that remains an interpretation, not a settled account of intent.
- Institutional response: The White House issued a pointed dismissal, while Parker answered at Comic-Con with a sarcastic apology.
- Audience response: Selected social posts show examples of approval, and reported ratings show reach. Neither establishes representative public opinion.
Taken together, the coverage portrays a premiere that generated attention on several fronts: its Trump-and-Satan gag, the corporate context around Paramount, its mix of political argument and vulgar comedy, and the unusually visible exchange between the White House and one of its creators. It does not support a claim that critics or audiences were unanimous.
