After the final Tribal Council, she felt proud and happy in the moment—even though she knew sadness might come later.
Why Balerdi said losing felt like a win
“I think my gratitude for the experience totally outweighed the loss for me,” Balerdi told Entertainment Weekly in an interview published December 18, 2025. She described going out to play as a win in itself and said she was proud of herself after the final Tribal Council.
Her description was personal, not a claim that losing was better than winning. Balerdi acknowledged she might cry later, but at that moment her gratitude for having played was stronger than her disappointment at the result.
How Survivor 49 ended for Balerdi
Balerdi reached the final three with Savannah Louie and Rizo Velovic. Louie won the jury vote 5-2-1; Balerdi finished second with two votes, from MC Chukwujekwu and Kristina Mills, according to True Dork Times’ Survivor 49 profile.

The interview’s “happiest Survivor loser” framing came up as Balerdi discussed MC changing his vote to her. She had expected him to favor Louie’s physical game, so she was moved that he rewarded her. She was surprised Alex did not vote for her, but said she respected the jurors’ decisions.
What she thought might have happened
Balerdi later assessed that she could have had a chance against Rizo and Sage Ahrens-Nichols if Rizo had won the fire-making challenge. After Louie won fire, she described the final as difficult, though she still thought she might have had a chance against Louie based on what jurors told her. These are Balerdi’s retrospective views about possible outcomes, not results that can be established.

The Knowledge Is Power play she says viewers did not see explained
Balerdi said the broadcast did not include her explanation of her Knowledge Is Power advantage play at final Tribal Council, and she believed that explanation helped persuade MC. That account comes from her interview recollection; the available season profile records her play against Steven, but does not independently confirm what was said in the unaired exchange. The profile also records that she won the final-four immunity challenge.
