Sophie Turner did not drop criminal charges against Joe Jonas: she asked a federal court to dismiss a civil petition alleging that he wrongfully kept their children in the United States. A New York judge approved the dismissal in January 2024, after the pair reached a parenting agreement, according to reporting by the Los Angeles Times and Entertainment Tonight.
What Turner filed—and what “charges” means here
On September 21, 2023, Turner filed a verified petition in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York seeking the return of the children to England under the Hague Convention and the International Child Abduction Remedies Act (ICARA). It was a civil case, not a criminal prosecution. The petition alleged wrongful retention; it was not a finding by a judge that Jonas abducted the children. The petition sets out Turner’s claims.
What Turner alleged
According to her petition, the family moved to England in April 2023, and the children’s stay in the United States while Turner filmed in the UK was temporary. Turner alleged that they were due to return to England around September 20, 2023, and that Jonas would not return their passports or agree to their return. These are allegations from her filing, not facts established by a court.
The Associated Press reported that the filing sought the children’s passports and their return to England. Its account described the girls as ages three and one at the time and summarized Turner’s position that their U.S. stay with Jonas and a nanny was temporary: AP’s September 21, 2023 report.

Jonas disputed the abduction characterization
Jonas’s representative rejected the language used to describe the dispute. As quoted by the AP, the representative said: “When language like ‘abduction’ is used, it is misleading at best, and a serious abuse of the legal system at worst.” That was Jonas’s side’s public response, not a judicial ruling.

In October 2023, Entertainment Tonight reported that the couple had signed a temporary custody arrangement after four days of mediation and that a UK judge approved it. In January 2024, Turner sought dismissal of the federal petition after the parties reached a parenting agreement, and a New York judge approved the dismissal, according to Entertainment Tonight and the Los Angeles Times.
The reported outcome does not establish that either parent’s account was true. The available reporting describes an agreement but does not reproduce its full terms, so it does not support claims about a specific ongoing custody schedule. The Los Angeles Times later reported that the divorce proceedings were finalized in September 2024.
