Sonic the Hedgehog 3 won the U.S. and Canadian opening weekend, beating Mufasa: The Lion King by about $24.7 million. But the opening was not the final verdict: in reported theatrical grosses, Mufasa finished ahead both domestically and worldwide. The “embarrassing” angle fits the contrast between the films’ openings and Mufasa’s slow start—not a claim that Sonic won the completed box-office race.
What each film earned at the box office
The figures below are reported theatrical grosses and production budgets listed by The Numbers, accessed October 8, 2026. Domestic means the U.S. and Canada; worldwide includes international markets. Grosses are not studio profit or the amount studios keep after theater splits and other costs.
| Measure | Sonic the Hedgehog 3 | Mufasa: The Lion King |
|---|---|---|
| U.S./Canada opening weekend | $60,102,146 | $35,409,365 |
| Final domestic gross | $236,115,100 | $254,567,693 |
| Final worldwide gross | $489,615,622 | $722,631,756 |
| Reported production budget | $122,000,000 | $200,000,000 |
On opening weekend, Sonic led by $24,692,781 using those final database figures. By the end of the reported theatrical run, Mufasa was ahead by $18,452,593 domestically and $233,016,134 worldwide. Those margins are arithmetic from The Numbers’ totals.
Why the opening-weekend headlines favored Sonic
Both movies opened in the U.S. on December 20, 2024, in the holiday frame. The Numbers lists Mufasa’s franchise release date as December 18, reflecting its international release timing; international rollouts for both films began before their U.S. dates.

Contemporaneous Associated Press coverage used studio estimates of $62 million for Sonic and $35 million for Mufasa, rather than the final opening-weekend database values above. AP also reported that Mufasa opened in 4,100 theaters against Sonic’s 3,761. Audience CinemaScores were A- for Mufasa and A for Sonic. The wider theater count did not prevent Mufasa from opening lower in North America.
That contrast made the initial result look decisive, but it only measured the films’ first U.S./Canada weekend. A first-weekend lead says who started ahead, not who will finish with the larger cumulative total.

How the lead changed over the holiday run
Mufasa gained ground in its second weekend
ScreenDollars reported on December 29, 2024, that Mufasa’s domestic gross rose 5% in its second weekend to $37.1 million. At the 10-day mark, it had reached $328 million worldwide, while Sonic had earned $137.6 million domestically. These are dated interim snapshots, not final totals, and the worldwide and domestic figures should not be compared as though they covered the same markets.
Sonic still led the cumulative domestic total at an early-January snapshot
By the first weekend of 2025, AP reported that Mufasa had taken the weekend lead, with an estimated $23.8 million against Sonic’s $21.2 million. Yet Sonic still led in cumulative domestic grosses at that point: $187.5 million to Mufasa’s $169.2 million. The weekend leader and the cumulative leader were different films, illustrating why box-office comparisons need a date and a measure.

What the budgets do—and do not—show
The Numbers lists production budgets of $122 million for Sonic and $200 million for Mufasa. These are reported production-budget figures, not complete break-even calculations. The available figures do not establish marketing costs, distribution terms, theatrical rentals, or ancillary revenue, so comparing a budget directly with a gross cannot prove either film’s profit or loss.
The comparison establishes the outcome of this particular theatrical race; it does not establish why audiences chose one film over the other or support a broad conclusion about video-game adaptations, Disney films, or audience preferences. No dated causal study is established by the cited figures.
