Sonic and Tails race to find a powerful emerald before Dr. Robotnik and Knuckles can claim it. It is a film, not the 1992 SEGA video game that shares its title.
What is Sonic the Hedgehog 2 about?
After settling in Green Hills, Sonic wants to prove that he can be a hero. Dr. Robotnik returns, this time alongside Knuckles, to search for a powerful emerald. Sonic teams up with Tails to find it first. That is the central premise given in Paramount Global Content’s film catalog.

The setup brings familiar characters from the Sonic franchise together in a live-action and computer-animated adventure. The available official synopsis describes the emerald race, but does not establish that the film is a direct retelling of the 1992 game.

How is the film different from the 1992 game?
The two works share a title but belong to different eras and formats: one is a 2022 feature film and the other is a 1992 video game. The film’s official synopsis centers on Sonic and Tails racing Robotnik and Knuckles to find an emerald. The official material cited here does not support a scene-by-scene comparison or the claim that the movie adapts only that game.
