Pete Seeger’s story did not end where A Complete Unknown does. After his contempt-of-Congress conviction was set aside in 1962, he continued performing and became more active in civil-rights work, antiwar advocacy and environmental campaigns. He kept making music and organizing public events into his final years, and died on January 27, 2014.
The film is about Bob Dylan’s rise beginning in 1961, not a full biography of Seeger. Searchlight’s official synopsis identifies Seeger, played by Edward Norton, as one of the people in Dylan’s story: Searchlight Pictures’ film page.

What happened to Seeger’s HUAC case?
Seeger’s public life after the film’s 1960s frame was shaped in part by years of legal and professional pressure. He refused to answer questions before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1955, was indicted for contempt in 1958, and was convicted in 1961. In 1962, an appeals court set aside the case because the indictment was faulty. This was an appellate reversal, not a pardon. Smithsonian Folkways’ tribute details the case and its outcome.
The pressure had affected his career as well as his freedom. Biographer David King Dunaway, as cited in the Folkways tribute, reported that Seeger released six LPs a year from 1954 to 1958. That figure captures his productivity during the period; it does not mean his later work followed the same annual pace.

- New York, 1961. A young Bob Dylan (Timothe Chalamet) arrives with his guitar and revolutionary talent, forging relationships with music icons on his meteoric rise which culminates in a groundbreaking and controversial performance that reverberates worldwide. How did his public work change after the appeal?
Civil rights
Rather than retreating from public life, Seeger expanded his activism after the case was set aside. Smithsonian Folkways says he became especially active in the African American civil-rights movement, marched in the South with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and worked at the Highlander Folk School. Smithsonian Magazine also recounts his civil-rights work in its retrospective on the Seeger collection: Smithsonian Magazine’s account.
Antiwar music
During the Vietnam War, Seeger opposed U.S. involvement and used songs to make that opposition public. Among his songs from this period were “Waist Deep in the Big Muddy” and “If You Love Your Uncle Sam (Bring ’Em Home).” His performance and songwriting remained closely connected to political causes rather than becoming separate from them. Smithsonian Folkways’ biography describes this activism.

Why did the Hudson River become part of his legacy?
In later decades, Seeger made environmental advocacy a major focus. Near his home in Beacon, New York, he helped campaign to clean up the Hudson River. Smithsonian Folkways’ artist profile connects that effort with his broader musical and environmental legacy: Pete Seeger’s Smithsonian Folkways profile.
What did Seeger do in his final years?
Seeger continued composing, performing and organizing into old age. In January 2009, he led hundreds of thousands of people in singing Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land” at the pre-inauguration concert at the Lincoln Memorial. Smithsonian Folkways reported that he was involved in organizing an event shortly before his death. Its January 28, 2014 remembrance announced that he had died the day before, on January 27, aged 94: Smithsonian Folkways’ remembrance.

Where can you explore Seeger’s music?
Smithsonian Folkways preserves recordings and biographical material about Seeger. Its 2014 remembrance reported that the collection then included 67 albums with Seeger as lead performer; that is a figure from the dated remembrance, not a current inventory count. The Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage also notes that Seeger wrote a book about playing banjo. Its Pete Seeger page is a starting point for his musical legacy.
