The months-long celebrations around Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s July 12, 2024, wedding in Mumbai became a ready-made subject for memes, cartoons and parodies. The jokes focused on the event’s duration, its star-studded guest list and performances, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appearance, and the contrast between immense wealth and inequality. These were selected examples of online commentary—not a measure of what most people thought or how widely any particular post travelled.
Why the wedding became meme material
The wedding was the culmination of a sequence of public celebrations: pre-wedding events in Jamnagar in March, a European cruise in May, and several events in July before the couple married in Mumbai on July 12. Scroll’s July 14, 2024, account describes how the extended timeline supplied material for memes, cartoons and parodies. Scroll’s roundup documents examples rather than counting all posts or measuring their reach.
The scale and variety of the festivities made them legible as spectacle: politicians, Bollywood celebrities and international stars appeared alongside one another, while celebrity performances and interactions became shareable moments. The Indian Express collected examples centered on appearances, dancing and encounters at the event, but its roundup does not establish representative audience response. Its viral-moments roundup is a record of selected scenes, not a survey of opinion.
What people made jokes about
The many phases and long run-up
The celebrations’ progression from March through May to July invited jokes about how long the wedding seemed to last and how many stages it had. In a post reproduced by Scroll, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh joked that the wedding had “gone through so many phases” that it made him wonder whether the Election Commission had planned it. This was political commentary, not evidence of any role by the commission.

Politics in the guest list
Scroll also records jokes about Prime Minister Narendra Modi attending, set against earlier political remarks about the Ambanis. The humor drew on the visibility of political figures at a private celebration and on the perceived closeness of wealth and power. It should be read as commentary about appearances and political optics, not proof of a particular political arrangement.
Celebrity appearances and performances
Posts about who attended, danced or interacted with whom turned brief moments into shareable material. The Indian Express’s collection shows the kinds of celebrity-centered scenes that circulated in coverage, but neither it nor the other reviewed reporting supplies a reliable count of views or a ranking of the most popular moments.

Luxury and inequality
Some cartoons and posts criticized conspicuous spending against the backdrop of inequality. Their point was not simply that the wedding was lavish: the contrast between extraordinary private wealth and everyday economic hardship gave the spectacle a political edge. A rhetorical question accompanying one social post cited by Scroll should not be treated as a verified statistic about how many people depend on government foodgrain.
What the wedding meant beyond the jokes
Coverage recorded competing interpretations, not a settled public verdict. The Washington Post described the event both as a showcase of India’s influence and as a target of criticism over extravagance, inequality and disruption to Mumbai commuters. Its July 2024 account captures that tension. Le Monde likewise discussed the wedding as a communications spectacle while reporting criticism of ostentation. Le Monde’s report attributed an estimated cost of €138 million to €294 million to Indian press; this was an estimate, not an audited total.

Supporters could view the event as a display of India’s international reach and economic confidence. Critics saw a lavish private celebration that sharpened questions about inequality and the relationship between wealth and politics. Memes and cartoons made those conflicting readings easy to compress into a punchline, but selected posts cannot tell us which interpretation was more common among Indians.
Local disruption was part of the story
The event also had practical consequences in Mumbai. Reports described traffic restrictions and work-from-home advisories for some offices in the Bandra Kurla Complex. Those measures affected particular routes and workplaces; the reporting does not support a claim that all businesses or residents experienced the disruption in the same way.

What the available examples can—and cannot—show
The Associated Press reported an expected guest list of 1,200 people for the March pre-wedding celebration. That figure refers to the expected guests at that earlier event, not attendance at the July wedding. The AP report provides context for the scale of the celebrations, but not a July attendance count.
The reporting establishes that memes, cartoons and viral-moment roundups addressed spectacle, politics, celebrity and inequality. It does not provide a reliable total of wedding-related memes, views or representative public sentiment. The examples are useful evidence of the themes people commented on—not a census of Indian opinion or a measure of how many people saw a particular joke.
