Disney’s March 15, 2025 Los Angeles premiere of Snow White had fewer media interviews than a typical studio premiere, while actors with dwarfism criticized the film’s use of CGI characters instead of performers. Disney did not confirm that the controversy caused the reduced event format; Grumpy voice actor Martin Klebba speculated about a connection but said he had no direct information.
What changed at the March 15 premiere?
Disney held the Los Angeles premiere at the El Capitan Theatre. Variety reported that the studio did not invite the usual group of media outlets to interview the cast and creative team. The event included photographers, a house crew, a pre-party and a screening, but offered fewer interview opportunities than a typical premiere. Disney did not tell Variety why it changed the format. What did Martin Klebba say?
Klebba, who voiced Grumpy, told The Hollywood Reporter that there would not be the usual red-carpet “hoopla.” As quoted by Just Jared, he said, “It really isn’t going to be a red carpet.” He speculated that controversy may have influenced the decision, but said he had not received direct information. That is Klebba’s interpretation, not a confirmed explanation from Disney. Just Jared’s March 14 report recounts his comments.
Why did actors with dwarfism criticize the remake?
The film used CGI versions of the seven characters rather than casting performers with dwarfism in those roles. Actors Ali Chapman and Matt McCarthy, along with organizer Jeff Beacher, objected that the choice excluded performers from roles they believed could have been played by people with dwarfism. McCarthy said actors with dwarfism have few roles and added, “I was born to play Dopey.” Chapman called the remake “a total travesty.” The Standard reported that a protest outside Disney Studios was planned, but its report does not establish whether it took place. The Standard’s March 17 report includes their objections.

What was Klebba’s view of CGI and casting?
Klebba criticized the decision to use CGI, saying, “Dwarfs aren’t going to go away just because you can’t imagine that they’re there.” He questioned the need to avoid depicting dwarfs, while also acknowledging that assembling seven actors with dwarfism would be difficult. His comments therefore addressed both the visibility of people with dwarfism and the practical challenge of casting seven performers; they were not simply a rejection of every concern behind Disney’s approach. The dispute followed actor Peter Dinklage’s 2022 criticism of the story as backward. Disney later said it was taking a different approach to the characters “to avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film” and that it had been consulting members of the dwarfism community. TIME reported the statement; it does not, by itself, establish what consultation took place or what participants concluded. TIME’s March 13, 2025 account places the statement alongside Dinklage’s criticism and the wider debate.

The disagreement centers on competing concerns: avoiding stereotypes in a familiar story, and ensuring performers with dwarfism are not shut out of acting opportunities. Disney’s stated rationale and consultation did not resolve the public objections raised by Chapman, McCarthy and Beacher.
