What the controversy was about
Snow White is Disney’s live-action musical reimagining of its 1937 animated film. It opened in theaters on March 21, 2025. Coverage described racist harassment directed at Zegler over her casting; that is distinct from criticism of the remake’s creative choices, debate about the seven characters, and political controversy involving Zegler and co-star Gal Gadot. These issues overlapped in public discussion, but they are not interchangeable explanations for every criticism or audience reaction.

The Guardian’s March 21, 2025 report described racist harassment of Zegler and reviews ranging from lukewarm to positive. TIME’s March 13, 2025 account covered the casting backlash, disputes over representation, and political controversy around the leads. Neither report quantifies the share of criticism that was racist, and the existence of racist attacks should not be used to label all critics or viewers.
Why IMDb’s rating drew attention
IMDb’s page displayed an unusual-voting-activity warning, according to IMDb and IMDb News. IMDb News reported a 1.5/10 rating snapshot, while Snopes described a 1.7/10 screenshot circulated after the theatrical opening. Both figures are historical snapshots, not the film’s confirmed current rating. IMDb ratings and vote distributions can change; check the live title page for its displayed score rather than relying on an old screenshot.

The warning means IMDb detected unusual voting activity under its mechanism. It does not establish that all unfavorable votes were cast by people who had not watched the film, nor does the score alone explain why a person rated it poorly. Snopes examined claims that the film was IMDb’s lowest-rated movie ever, but the circulating screenshots do not settle that all-time-record claim. What the rating can—and cannot—tell you
An IMDb user score is one measure of audience response, not a substitute for professional reviews, disclosed audience surveys, or ticket sales. Those measures answer different questions, and a low score cannot by itself establish the film’s quality, whether most viewers disliked it, or whether backlash caused a change in attendance.
For context, the Associated Press reported an estimated $43 million domestic opening and an $87.3 million global launch on March 23, 2025, along with a B+ CinemaScore. Those were contemporaneous opening-weekend estimates and a reported audience grade—not final box-office totals or proof of what caused people to buy or skip tickets. The AP report places the launch alongside the surrounding controversies.
Why the seven characters became a separate debate
The remake’s approach to the seven characters prompted its own discussion about representation and casting. ABC News quoted a Disney spokesperson saying: “To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community.” That statement describes Disney’s stated intent; it does not establish that the portrayal was received positively by everyone affected.

TIME also reported criticism from actor Peter Dinklage, who characterized the story as a “f-ing backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together,” and discussed the employment implications of casting roles written for little people. In the same report, actor Dylan Postl said: “I can’t go for the Harrison Ford or George Clooney roles because that’s not for me. These dwarf roles are for people of my stature…” These are the speakers’ views, not a single consensus within the dwarfism community. TIME’s report gives the fuller context.
