Jon Watts reportedly chose not to direct the fourth Tom Holland Spider-Man film after the response to Spider-Man: No Way Home convinced him he had witnessed a rare, unrepeatable moviegoing moment. He said, as reported in BGR’s account of a 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, that “it’s never going to be like this, ever again.”
Why did Jon Watts step away from Spider-Man 4?
Watts’ reported reason was the audience response to No Way Home. Recalling seeing the film with an audience in December 2021, he described the reaction as extraordinary: “That was such a specific moment in time, and the reaction to that movie was just so unbelievable.” He added, “it’s never going to be like this, ever again.” BGR’s September 2024 report attributes those remarks to Watts’ interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
That account supports a specific explanation: Watts felt the film’s reception marked a singular moment. It does not establish that he left because of burnout, creative conflict, studio pressure, or a decision to retire.
Was the Fantastic Four departure the same decision?
No. Watts’ earlier exit from directing Marvel’s Fantastic Four, announced in April 2022, was a separate move and does not explain his decision about the Spider-Man sequel. Marvel Studios presidents Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito said they understood and supported his reasons for stepping away, adding that they had looked forward to working with him on the film. Watts said making the three Spider-Man films had been “an incredible and life changing experience” and expressed hope of working with Marvel again. TheWrap reported the statements.
