“Western converts to Hinduism” is a useful umbrella for these five stories, but it does not describe one uniform path. Sister Nivedita is presented as Swami Vivekananda’s disciple; Mirra Alfassa as a spiritual collaborator of Sri Aurobindo; Christopher Isherwood as a Vedanta follower; George Harrison as a Hare Krishna devotee; and Julia Roberts as someone reported to have practiced Hinduism. The evidence and the nature of each relationship differ.
What “convert” means in these five accounts
Mridula Chari’s 2015 Scroll.in feature groups five Western figures under the idea of people seeking spiritual meaning in India. It does not establish that all underwent a formal conversion ceremony, nor does it apply a single definition of conversion. The accounts instead describe distinct forms of religious engagement: discipleship, spiritual collaboration, affiliation with Vedanta, devotion to the Hare Krishna movement, and reported personal practice. Read the Scroll.in feature.
| Person | Relationship described | Teacher or tradition |
|---|---|---|
| Sister Nivedita (Margaret Noble) | Disciple who moved to India | Swami Vivekananda |
| Mirra Alfassa, later called the Mother | Devoted follower and spiritual collaborator | Sri Aurobindo |
| Christopher Isherwood | Follower who practiced Hinduism | Vivekananda’s Vedanta Society; Swami Prabhavananda |
| George Harrison | Devotee | Hare Krishna movement |
| Julia Roberts | Reported in 2010 as a practicing Hindu | Personal practice; no organization specified in the feature |
The labels and biographical details in this comparison follow Chari’s feature; a later India Foundation Journal article offers limited additional context on Nivedita, Alfassa, and Roberts. Neither source establishes a standardized category of “convert.” India Foundation Journal, March–April 2019.
Sister Nivedita: Margaret Noble’s discipleship to Vivekananda
Chari identifies Sister Nivedita as Margaret Noble, an Irish-born teacher who met Swami Vivekananda in England in 1895, moved to India in 1898, and became his disciple. The feature frames her commitment as an embrace of Hinduism and an orthodox Hindu life.

It attributes to Vivekananda this instruction: “You have to set yourself to Hinduize your thoughts, your needs, your conceptions and your habits.” The wording is reproduced in the secondary feature; the source set does not identify an original letter or archival document for the quotation, so it is best treated as an attribution to Vivekananda reported by Scroll.in rather than independently authenticated wording.
Mirra Alfassa: spiritual work with Sri Aurobindo
Chari’s account says the French-born Mirra Alfassa moved to Pondicherry in 1914 and became a devoted follower of Sri Aurobindo. It also recounts her description of visions and the name “Krishna”; that vision narrative should be understood as her account as relayed by Scroll.in, not as independently verified fact.

The India Foundation Journal’s 2019 article separately describes Alfassa’s work with Aurobindo and says he called her “The Mother.” This relationship is most clearly characterized in the sources as long-term spiritual collaboration and following, rather than evidence of a documented conversion rite.
Christopher Isherwood: a Western writer in Vedanta
Scroll.in describes British writer Christopher Isherwood as a prominent follower of Vivekananda’s Vedanta Society. It says he met Swami Prabhavananda in California, translated the Bhagavad Gita, wrote about Ramakrishna, and practiced Hinduism. Those biographical details are claims of the feature; the other source reviewed here does not independently verify each one.

George Harrison: devotion to the Hare Krishna movement
Chari says Harrison met the founder of the Hare Krishna movement in 1969 and became a devotee. The feature distinguishes this later devotional relationship from his earlier association with transcendental meditation. It is an account of Harrison specifically and should not be generalized to the other Beatles.
Julia Roberts: what the reporting establishes
Chari’s 2015 feature reports that a 2010 Elle interview described Roberts as a practicing Hindu who visited temples, and that a photograph of Neem Karoli Baba had interested her. The 2019 India Foundation Journal article also says she embraced Hinduism. These are retrospective reports: the sources reviewed do not establish Roberts’s current religious identity or practice.

The examples make a varied set, not a reliable count of Western converts. The subject-specific source is a 2015 feature, while the later India Foundation Journal article is an interpretive secondary source with limited corroboration. The sources do not provide a conversion statistic or establish a uniform standard for deciding when someone has converted. For that reason, “some Western converts” is best read as the feature’s broad framing, with each person’s relationship described on its own terms.
