Sinners invites comparison with Robert Rodriguez’s 1996 vampire crime-horror film From Dusk Till Dawn, but resemblance is not proof of copying. Ryan Coogler has acknowledged the earlier film as an influence; what gives Sinners its own weight is how its supernatural horror grows from 1930s Mississippi, Jim Crow-era life and the blues.
Did Sinners copy From Dusk Till Dawn?
The evidence supports calling From Dusk Till Dawn a reference point for Sinners, not declaring the newer film a copy. In an April 2025 interview with The Atlantic, Coogler discussed Rodriguez’s film as a 24-hour story and connected its compressed time frame to his own story unfolding from one morning to the next. He said, “To me, Dusk Till Dawn is also that.” The Atlantic’s interview with Ryan Coogler makes the influence explicit, but does not establish that the films share a copied plot.
Coogler also addressed the comparison in a January 2025 interview with The Nerds of Color, discussing From Dusk Till Dawn among the influences viewers might recognize. That acknowledgment makes the parallel more than speculation, while still leaving room to distinguish influence from imitation. The Nerds of Color interview.
What makes Sinners’ story different?
Its horror is rooted in a specific place and history
Sinners takes place in 1930s Mississippi. Twin brothers Smoke and Stack plan to open a juke joint in a Jim Crow-era community, where an undead threat arrives. The setting is not simply a period backdrop: the characters’ plans and the danger they face are framed by the social world around them. The Directors Guild of America’s account of Coogler’s film discussion describes that premise and setting. Directors Guild of America.

The blues and the Delta shape the film’s identity
The blues and Mississippi Delta are central to the film’s creative and cultural frame. The Associated Press connects the music, vampires and Delta setting in its coverage of Coogler’s original film, while CBS News reports Coogler describing Sinners as “genre-fluid.” That phrase fits a film that brings horror together with music and historical drama rather than treating those elements as separate attractions. Why that difference can make Sinners the superior story
Calling Sinners the superior story is an interpretation, not a fact settled by the films’ shared influence. The case for it is that the horror premise is attached to a particular history, culture and community: a juke joint being built in Jim Crow-era Mississippi, with the blues integral to the film’s sense of place. That gives the supernatural conflict stakes beyond survival, because it threatens a world the characters are trying to create and sustain.
