Bob “Slim” Dunlap, the Minnesota guitarist and singer-songwriter who joined the Replacements in 1987, died at home in Minneapolis on December 18, 2024. He was 73. His family said his death followed complications from a severe stroke he suffered in 2012.

Who was Slim Dunlap?

Born August 14, 1951, in Plainview, Minnesota, Dunlap became a working musician in Minneapolis. Before joining the Replacements, he played in local bands and held jobs including cab driver and janitor at the First Avenue nightclub. He described his early musical life to the Los Angeles Times: “I played in every little band I could play in, every band that would have me.”

In 1987, after original guitarist Bob Stinson left, Dunlap was invited to join the Replacements. MPR’s The Current reports that the invitation came while Dunlap was working at First Avenue; the Los Angeles Times describes an informal, beer-fueled audition. He stayed with the band until it broke up in 1991. The Slim Dunlap Archives records his Replacements tenure as 1987–1991.

What did he bring to the Replacements?

Frontman Paul Westerberg said he wanted a guitarist with a bluesier feel and an understanding of country music, recalling, “I wanted someone bluesier, who was hip to country music, ’cause that’s where I envisioned the band going.” The Los Angeles Times reported that explanation in its obituary. Pitchfork described Dunlap’s playing as gentle and considered, saying it added depth to faster songs and introspection to quieter ones; that is the critic’s characterization, rather than a claim of universal consensus.

Dunlap played on the band’s final two studio albums: Don’t Tell a Soul (1989) and All Shook Down, released in 1990 according to MPR’s The Current and the Los Angeles Times. Some retrospective accounts date All Shook Down to 1991, so the year can vary by source. Dunlap joined after Pleased to Meet Me had been released; he toured behind that album but did not play on it.

What music did Slim Dunlap make outside the band?

Dunlap released two solo albums: The Old New Me in 1993 and Times Like This in 1996. The first includes “The Ballad of the Opening Band,” a song drawing on his years playing clubs before joining the Replacements. He told the Los Angeles Times that listeners may read the song as sad, but “the guy in the song gets to play.”
