That was the state government’s account of its investigation at the time—not a judicial finding. The Singapore coroner later ruled Garg died by accidental drowning, while Assam’s criminal case proceeded to trial after charges were framed against seven people. What did Sarma say in the Assembly?
Garg, an Assamese singer-songwriter, died in Singapore on September 19, 2025, after an incident while swimming during a yacht outing. On November 25, Sarma told the Assam Legislative Assembly that, after a preliminary investigation, Assam Police was sure the death was “not a case of culpable homicide, but it was a plain and simple murder.” The statement was Sarma’s characterization of the police investigation at that stage; it did not establish that a murder had occurred or that anyone was guilty. What did Singapore’s coroner conclude?
On March 25, 2026, Singapore State Coroner Adam Nakhoda ruled that Garg’s death was an accidental drowning. He found no evidence that Garg had been forced, coerced or pushed into the water, and upheld the Police Coast Guard’s finding of no foul play. Singapore Police Force said on April 1 that its investigation had concluded and its findings were consistent with the coroner’s ruling of accidental drowning with no evidence of foul play. That is Singapore’s conclusion; it is not an Assam criminal-court judgment or an acquittal of the people charged in Assam. Singapore Police Force statement.

What happened in the Assam case?
The SIT filed its chargesheet
On December 12, 2025, the Assam Police Special Investigation Team filed a chargesheet in Guwahati. The Indian Express reported that it named seven accused and brought murder charges against four. A chargesheet sets out the prosecution’s allegations; it is not a verdict. The Indian Express reported the chargesheet.
The court framed charges
On May 26, 2026, an Assam fast-track court framed charges against all seven accused, including murder charges against four. The report said the court found prima facie material sufficient to proceed. Charge framing allows the trial to move forward; it does not mean the accused have been convicted. The Indian Express reported the court’s order.

The proceedings concern the same death but are distinct legal processes. Sarma’s Assembly statement came before the Singapore coroner’s ruling. The difference between the Assam prosecution’s murder case and Singapore’s accidental-drowning finding remains unresolved by the material available here; it should not be collapsed into a claim that either jurisdiction has decided the other’s case.
What did the toxicology evidence say?
Channel NewsAsia reported that inquiry testimony recorded a blood alcohol concentration of 333 milligrams per 100 millilitres and that this level suggested severe intoxication, with impaired coordination and reflexes.
