Sigourney Weaver said she was drawn to The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart by director Glendyn Ivin, its unusual story and the chance to visit Australia with her husband. Filming brought her to the Upper Hunter Valley, but the series’ landscapes were assembled across several New South Wales locations and the Northern Territory—not one real-world version of its fictional crater.
Why Sigourney Weaver took the role of June Hart
Weaver plays June Hart, Alice’s grandmother. In Clare Rigden’s PerthNow interview, published 4 August 2023, Weaver called June “an amazing character unlike anyone I’ve ever played before.” She said, “I was attracted by the fact that Glendyn Ivin was directing it.”

The adaptation also stood out to her for the range of women and girls in its story. “I really hadn’t ever read anything like this, this story that pulled together so many different strands of girls and women of all different ages,” Weaver said. She received the first three episodes of the script and then read Holly Ringland’s debut novel, on which the series is based. The seven-part adaptation was directed by Ivin.
Her experience filming in Australia
Weaver said she and her husband, Jim Simpson, wanted to come to Australia, adding that “we had the most marvellous time.” Her recollections included working in the Upper Hunter Valley, part of a production filmed in New South Wales and the Northern Territory from late 2021 to early 2022.

She also singled out her time with Alyla Brown, who plays young Alice, saying she had fun with her. Weaver praised the ensemble, describing it as “just a kickass women’s cast in our show,” and named Asher Keddie, Leah Purcell, Frankie Adams, Brown and Alycia Debnam-Carey.
Where the NSW scenes were filmed
Screen NSW identifies Scone, Grafton, Sydney and Bargo among the New South Wales locations. A 2023 production account in Mediaweek gives more detail about how locations served different parts of the story:

- Factory sealed DVD
- House: The property used as the story’s house was in Scone.
- Flower farm: Flower-farm scenes were filmed in Bargo.
- Cane fields: Scenes were made near Grafton and Yamba.
These are production locations, not a guide to an open-to-visitors attraction called Thornfield. Screen NSW reported that the location team covered 25 locations over a 97-day shoot and spent eight weeks scouting during pre-production; those figures are the agency’s 2023 account.
The crater is fictional, not a single filming destination
The crater associated with the story does not exist as a real location. Executive producer Jodi Matterson told Mediaweek that the production filmed landscape bases in the Northern Territory and created the crater with visual effects. The series’ visual geography therefore combines real locations in two territories with effects work; the crater should not be mistaken for a specific NSW site.

From Ringland’s novel to the screen
Showrunner Sarah Lambert has described beginning with Ringland’s novel and imagining Weaver for June. ABC Radio Sydney’s account says Lambert first pictured a “Sigourney Weaver-type” before pursuing Weaver herself, alongside Australian performers including Leah Purcell, Asher Keddie and Alycia Debnam-Carey. The result is a seven-episode adaptation rooted in Ringland’s story, with an ensemble cast and locations chosen to evoke its fictional world.
