In the Grade 4 worksheet edition, translated into Filipino by Bernie Santos, the trick lets Pilandok escape with the traveler’s gold—but the bees deliver an immediate consequence.
What happens in the story?
Pilandok goes out to find food for his hungry family. He rests beneath a tree where a beehive hangs. A traveler, Somusun sa Alongan, arrives carrying valuable goods and asks what Pilandok is guarding.
Pilandok claims the hive is a royal batingaw—a bell that only the Sultan’s relatives may ring. Somusun says he is of royal status and offers Pilandok a sack of gold for the chance to strike it. Pilandok agrees, but asks to leave first. Once Pilandok has escaped with the gold, Somusun hits the hive with a piece of wood. The bees swarm and sting him until he loses consciousness.
Warriors find Somusun and take him to the Sultan. He is treated for a week. These names and events follow the worksheet version; another online retelling also uses the beehive-and-bell deception, but wording and spellings differ (separate retelling).

Why is it called Si Pilandok at ang Batingaw?
The batingaw is the center of Pilandok’s trick. He gives the beehive the appearance and status of a royal bell, making Somusun’s desire to ring it—and his belief that he is entitled to do so—part of the deception. The title names Pilandok and the object that drives the plot, rather than the traveler who falls for the ruse.
Who are the main characters?
- Pilandok: A quick-thinking trickster who seeks food for his hungry family and devises the false-bell story.
- Somusun sa Alongan: The traveler who offers gold to strike the supposed royal bell, then suffers the bees’ attack.
- The Sultan’s warriors: They find Somusun after he loses consciousness and bring him for treatment.
What might the story mean?
The plot invites readers to consider cleverness, deception, greed, and consequences. Pilandok’s ingenuity succeeds because Somusun accepts the chance to ring what he believes is a royal bell; the immediate result of Somusun striking it is a swarm of bees. The worksheet does not prescribe one definitive moral, so these are interpretations of the events rather than an official lesson stated by the text.

Why do spellings and details vary?
The worksheet spells the traveler’s name Somusun sa Alongan; other circulating copies use forms such as Somusum, Somuson, or Somusun. Retellings can also differ in why Pilandok seeks food, the wording of the bargain, and how the ending describes Somusun’s recovery. No single canonical text is established here. When precision matters, identify the edition you are discussing instead of treating variants as errors.
