The distinction matters: a story can reach its intended emotional resolution while the show continues. The creators have said season 4 will tell a new story rather than return Jimmy to the same point in his grief.

Shrinking follows Jimmy Laird, a grieving therapist who starts breaking professional rules with his clients. Bill Lawrence, the show’s co-creator and showrunner, said the creators pitched Apple a three-season story about whether Jimmy would be overwhelmed by grief or find a way through it.

In a TVLine interview published April 8, 2026, Lawrence called season 3 “the end of that three season story that we originally pitched to Apple.” He said the intended endpoint was for Jimmy to have made it through his grief: “This three season story is over.” Read Lawrence’s TVLine interview.
That resolution explains why the season can feel like a series ending. It completes the central arc the creators had mapped out, even though Apple later approved another season.

How does season 4 fit after that ending?
Lawrence said continuing the show meant moving into a different story, not restarting Jimmy’s bereavement as though the previous seasons had not happened. Jason Segel, who co-created the series and plays Jimmy, described the transition in a Los Angeles Times interview published April 9, 2026: “This is the end of this story and it’s time to start a new one.” Read the Los Angeles Times interview.
The fourth season therefore follows a completed three-season arc rather than undoing its ending. The renewal establishes that the series continues; it does not establish what season 4’s plot will be.

Season 3 premiered January 28, 2026. Its 11th episode, “And That’s Our Time,” was listed as the season finale for April 8, 2026, on Apple’s official series page.

Lawrence’s comments explain that season 4 begins a new story, but they do not say how long that story will run. It would be premature to treat the conclusion of Jimmy’s original arc as a confirmed end date for Shrinking.
