Sherlock Holmes Day is a good excuse to revisit the detective’s origins, his most famous address and the story that seemed to kill him. One popular detail needs a caveat: January 6 is commonly celebrated as Holmes’s birthday, but Arthur Conan Doyle never gives that date in the original stories. Here are ten facts, with canon kept distinct from tradition and museum lore.
10 facts about Sherlock Holmes
-
January 6 is tradition, not a confirmed birthday
Holmes’s birthday is often marked on January 6, but that date is not stated in Conan Doyle’s stories. Treat it as a Sherlockian convention or inference rather than a canonical fact. The date’s precise origin is not established here.
-
The canon comprises four novels and 56 short stories
Conan Doyle wrote four Sherlock Holmes novels and 56 short stories, according to the Associated Press in 2026. That count refers to the original Holmes works, not later adaptations.
-
Holmes made his first appearance in 1887
The first Holmes story was the novel A Study in Scarlet. The official Arthur Conan Doyle site dates its publication to 1887.

His reputation extends well beyond the books
The Conan Doyle Estate describes Holmes as widely considered a British cultural icon. That is the estate’s characterization, rather than a measurable ranking; the lasting reach of the character is also reflected in his many adaptations and continued place in popular culture.
-
“The Final Problem” gave Holmes a dramatic exit
In the 1893 story “The Final Problem,” Holmes confronts his nemesis Professor Moriarty at Reichenbach Falls, and both disappear over the falls. Readers were left to believe Holmes had died.
-
“The Adventure of the Empty House” brought him back
Conan Doyle later reversed that apparent ending. In “The Adventure of the Empty House,” Holmes reappears and explains that he survived the encounter at Reichenbach. The two stories make his disappearance and return a single, deliberately staged turn in the series.
-
221B Baker Street was not a real address in Doyle’s time
The familiar address began as fiction. The Associated Press account says Baker Street did not reach number 221 when Conan Doyle was writing.

The museum’s 221B is a specially permitted address
The Sherlock Holmes Museum is physically located between 237 and 241 Baker Street, but uses the 221B address by special permission, the AP reports. The number therefore connects the attraction to the fictional home rather than documenting an original Holmes residence.
-
The Sherlock Holmes Museum opened in 1990
The museum is a real visitor attraction, opened in 1990, and displays period-style objects associated with Holmes’s world, according to the AP. Its props evoke the stories; they are not historical evidence that Holmes existed. Visitor arrangements can change, so check the museum’s own current information before planning a visit.

Rights claims depend on jurisdiction and the specific work
The Conan Doyle Estate says it owns remaining protected story and character copyrights in the United States and rights in names and images in multiple jurisdictions. That is the rights holder’s stated position, not a universal legal ruling: copyright status can depend on the work, territory and intended use. The estate also reports that Guinness World Records lists Holmes as the “most portrayed movie character”; that is an estate-reported record, not an independently verified Guinness claim here.
