Who was Seth Binzer?
Known professionally as Shifty Shellshock, Seth Binzer was a co-founder and lead singer of Crazy Town, the Los Angeles band that fused heavy metal and hip-hop. He was 49 when he died.
Crazy Town’s history spans several milestones rather than one universally stated formation date. The Los Angeles Times described the band as forming in 1999 with Binzer and Bret “Epic” Mazur and other members. Pitchfork traces Binzer and Mazur’s meeting to the early 1990s, while the band’s debut album, The Gift of Game, arrived in November 1999.

Crazy Town followed the debut with Darkhorse in 2002. Binzer released the solo album Happy Love Sick in 2004. Describing its sound to the Los Angeles Times, he said he had tried to remove the heavy-rock element, calling it “surfer hip-hop” with reggae overtones and dance and R&B influences. Crazy Town reunited and released The Brimstone Sluggers in 2015.

His manager, Howie Hubberman, told the Los Angeles Times after Binzer’s death: “We all tried, but ultimately, we all failed, or Shifty would still be here.” His addiction was an important part of his public story, but it was not the whole of his life or his musical work.
