Uzo Aduba stars as detective Cordelia Cupp, who investigates a killing during a disastrous state dinner alongside FBI special agent Edwin Park, played by Randall Park. Netflix availability can vary by territory.
What is The Residence about?
The mystery unfolds after a murder at a White House state dinner. Cupp investigates a sprawling cast of staff and guests, with Netflix pitching the series through the premise: “132 rooms. 157 suspects. One dead body. One wildly eccentric detective. One disastrous State Dinner.” Those numbers are promotional setup figures for the show, not claims about a real White House murder or an actual suspect list. Netflix Tudum’s series overview describes the premise and characters.
The show combines a murder investigation with comedy. Creator and showrunner Paul William Davies told Netflix Tudum: “I want people to be entertained. I want them to laugh, to be engaged — to try to solve this mystery. I hope they enjoy meeting these people, and they learn something.”
Is The Residence on Netflix yet?
Yes. Netflix currently lists The Residence as an eight-episode series on its service. The “coming to Netflix” phrasing is outdated announcement language; the series has premiered. Check Netflix in your region for current availability. Netflix’s title page lists the series.
Is the series based on a true story or a book?
The Residence is a fictional murder mystery, not a true-crime account. It was inspired by Kate Andersen Brower’s nonfiction book The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House, but it is not a direct adaptation: Brower’s book is not a murder mystery, and the show’s characters and case are an original story. Netflix Tudum explains the book’s connection to the series; Shondaland’s announcement identifies Brower’s book as a 2015 bestseller.
The book is useful as nonfiction background on White House staff and the private world of the residence, not as a companion novel or account of Cupp’s fictional investigation.
Who stars in The Residence, and who made it?
- Uzo Aduba plays detective Cordelia Cupp.
- Randall Park plays FBI special agent Edwin Park.
- Paul William Davies created and showruns the series and is an executive producer.
- Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers are executive producers.
Aduba described the setting to Netflix Tudum as “a different take and spin on the house that we all know — it’s a peek inside a world that we don’t often get to see.”

Netflix reported in 2025 that the series was filmed entirely in California, including at Raleigh Studios in Hollywood, rather than at the White House. Netflix’s production account gives a 143-day shoot and reports more than 80 cast members, 1,200 crew members—including 300 construction crew—and 5,300 extras. These are Netflix-reported production figures, not independently audited totals. Netflix Tudum’s production feature provides those details.
