Shin Godzilla changes through four numbered on-screen stages: an initial creature glimpsed in the water, the creeping Form 2, the bipedal Form 3, and the towering Form 4 familiar to most viewers. The numbers describe the film’s progression, not a formal real-world biological classification. Its final image hints at another change beginning at the tail, but does not show a completed fifth form.
What are Shin Godzilla’s forms?
The stages track visible changes in the creature’s posture, movement, body, and capacity for destruction as it encounters a changing environment. The earliest appearance is a tail-like shape moving in the water; the film then shows the creature on land in Forms 2 and 3 before it reaches its large Form 4. A specialist franchise chronology describes this broad sequence and the unresolved final image in Toho Kingdom’s “Godzilla: Through the Ages”.
These numbered forms are a convenient way to follow what the film shows. They should not be mistaken for a scientific taxonomy or for a complete account of the creature’s biology.
How do Forms 2 and 3 differ?
Both are transitional land stages, but they look and move differently. Bandai Spirits’ Tamashii Web feature on its film-based figures describes the differences in posture and visible development; it is product documentation, not a film script or production bible.

| Stage | Posture and movement | Visible development |
|---|---|---|
| Form 2 | A low, creeping posture, supported by the hind legs and tail. | Described as intermediate between fish and reptile, with a conspicuous large eye, a collar area, and still-undeveloped dorsal fin and body surface. |
| Form 3 | After encountering a building, it gains the ability to walk upright on two legs. | The forelimbs develop, the collar closes, and the skin becomes harder in texture. It still visibly retains features of Form 2. |
The contrast is not simply that Form 3 stands taller: it shows the creature adapting to movement on land, with more developed forelimbs and a changed surface. Tamashii Web documents both forms in its S.H.MonsterArts Godzilla (2016) Form 2 & Form 3 feature, published February 10, 2017.
What is Shin Godzilla’s final form?
Form 4 is the large Godzilla form most viewers associate with the film. Its most striking new capability is the destructive heat-ray attack. Tamashii Web’s account describes the body lighting up during the attack and the jaw appearing to break open, emphasizing how dramatically the attack changes the creature’s appearance. Its Form 4 feature, published November 21, 2016, is an official collectible feature rather than a production reference.

“Final form” is therefore best understood as the last fully developed form shown in the film, not proof that the creature could never change again.
What are the humanoid things at the end?
As Godzilla freezes, humanoid, Godzilla-like figures begin emerging from its tail. The image suggests that another transformation may be starting, but the film does not show a completed fifth form or explain what the figures would do. Claims about a definitive next stage or a settled fate go beyond what that ending establishes.

Why does the creature look so unfamiliar?
The design aimed to make Godzilla feel biologically unfamiliar rather than like a conventional animal. In a 2016 Cinema Today report on the film’s design, sculptor Takayuki Takeya described director Hideaki Anno’s concept as a “perfect organism” (an English rendering of the Japanese wording). Takeya also said the skin’s irregular bumps and vertical lines drew on the appearance of bitter melon, or goya, and that the design sought a body a human performer could not inhabit. These are comments about the design’s intent and visual references, not claims about literal biology.
