Two analyses point to a longer decline in sexual content in movies. For TV, there is no reliable recent measurement here proving an increase.
Why did it seem like sex was back on screen?
A handful of high-profile films made the comeback narrative easy to see. Early-2024 coverage described the awards season as unusually sexy, pointing to Poor Things, Saltburn and All of Us Strangers. Those titles are meaningful examples of what audiences were discussing, but a few prominent releases cannot establish a trend across all films.

That distinction matters: a visible run of provocative work can shape cultural conversation even when the broader pattern moves in the opposite direction. The evidence supports the impression of a moment, not a measured industry-wide rebound.
Are there more sex scenes in movies again?
The available film analyses do not support that conclusion. They use different measures and samples, so their figures should be read separately rather than combined into a single count.

Analysis of major films reported by The Guardian
The Guardian reported in 2024 on Stephen Follows’ analysis, which found almost 40% less sexual content in major films than at the start of the millennium. In top-grossing films, the share with no sexual content reportedly rose from about 18% in 2000 to 46% in 2023. These figures concern the analysis’s major-film sample, not every movie released or television programming. The Guardian’s account of the analysis provides the context for those estimates.
The Ringer’s IMDb Parents Guide analysis
The Ringer analyzed more than 40,000 movies using submissions to IMDb Parents Guide, a user-reported dataset. It found that movies tagged for mild or severe sex and nudity had fallen 30–50% from their respective peaks. Its count for severe sex and nudity was 35 films in 2023, compared with 64 in 2018 and 77 in 2012. These are counts of films carrying a particular user-submitted tag—not measurements of scene length, intensity, or every film released. Read The Ringer’s analysis and methodology.

- COLLECTION CONTENTS: Features three romantic films based on Nicholas Sparks novels - Safe Haven, The Best of Me, and The Longest Ride on Blu-ray format
- MOVIE FORMATS: High-definition Blu-ray presentation of all three films, providing superior picture and sound quality
- ROMANCE TRILOGY: Experience three compelling love stories from acclaimed author Nicholas Sparks' bestselling novels brought to life on screen
- STAR-STUDDED CAST: Features performances from Josh Duhamel, Julianne Hough, James Marsden, Michelle Monaghan, Scott Eastwood, and Britt Robertson
- ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: Three full-length feature films in one collection, perfect for romantic movie marathons and Nicholas Sparks fans
The two analyses point in a similar long-term direction, but they do not measure the same thing. One reports on sexual content in major films; the other counts user-reported content tags. Neither establishes a universal total of sex scenes, and neither demonstrates a 2024 reversal.
Is sex on TV making a comeback?
That remains an open measurement question. The Ringer discussed streaming as a possible destination for sexual material, but said it could not find recent reliable studies measuring how much television sex had increased over the preceding 25 years. Without a robust time series, it is not possible to say that sex on TV definitively rose in 2024.

Film and television should not be treated as one evidence pool: the available film analyses do not answer what happened across TV, and a few shows or streaming titles would not establish a medium-wide trend.
What intimacy coordinators do—and what their presence does not prove
Intimacy coordinators help performers and production teams plan and choreograph scenes involving simulated sex, nudity or other vulnerable situations. In a 2024 CBS News interview, New York City coordinator Amy Northrup described the role as helping coordinate such scenes, while emphasizing, “We are not the human resources department, we’re not the sex police.” Discussions may cover a director’s vision, camera setups, body positioning, nudity and specific actions. Coordination can also help address practical safety concerns, such as an allergy relevant to a kissing scene. CBS News explains the work and Northrup’s perspective.

- In Detroit, a pop-culture enthusiast steals cocaine from his new wife's pimp, prompting the mobsters who own the drugs to pursue the couple.
A 2024 FIA survey received responses from 20 of 32 invited intimacy professionals across 15 countries. Respondents described work involving nudity, simulated sex, sexual violence, close physical contact and some emotionally exposing scenes. They saw their role as connecting performers and production, supporting consent and boundaries, and choreographing intimate work; most reported involvement in pre-production, rehearsals and production. Because this was a small, selected professional sample, it should not be treated as a census of the field. FIA’s survey findings offer a practitioner-focused view.
The existence of intimacy coordination does not show that films became less sexual, nor does it explain the reported long-term decline. It is a way productions can plan intimate work and address consent and safety, not a measure of how often such scenes appear.

What classification changes say about audiences
In the UK, the BBFC said its revised 2024 classification guidelines drew on feedback from 12,000 people and reflected changing expectations around sex scenes at the 12/15 classification boundary. The organization reported on the guidelines in 2025. This is evidence about classification standards and audience expectations in a specific national context—not a count of how many sex scenes films or shows contain worldwide. See the BBFC’s 2024 annual report announcement.
Classification decisions are category- and geography-specific. A shift in what viewers or classifiers expect at a particular age boundary can coexist with fewer scenes overall; it does not establish that screen sex became more frequent.
